The Best Non-Legendary Dragon-Type Pokémon, Ranked for Scarlet and Violet Singles

Dragonite is the top pick in this Scarlet and Violet singles-focused ranking, but the best non-Legendary Dragon-type depends on the game, format and role you need.

For Scarlet and Violet singles, Dragonite is the strongest pick among the non-Legendary Dragon-types covered here: its setup potential, broad coverage and Multiscale give it several ways to threaten opponents. That is a format-specific judgment, not a universal verdict for every Pokémon game. If you mean “Which Dragon Pokémon are strongest?” or “Is Dragonite better than Garchomp or Dragapult?”, the answer depends on the rules, game and role you care about.

How this ranking defines “best”

This ranking uses competitive singles in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as its lens, with emphasis on battle role, offensive pressure, coverage, defensive utility and team fit. The consulted competitive analysis supports Dragonite’s high placement, but it does not establish a definitive order for every eligible species. A ranking for a different generation, official tournament format, story playthrough or character popularity could look different.

Eligibility is based on type, not appearance: a Pokémon must actually have the Dragon type and must not be Legendary or Mythical. The Pokémon Company International described nearly 100 Dragon-type Pokémon across major regions in a 2024 article, an approximate count rather than a current exact total: Pokémon’s Dragon-type quiz.

1. Dragonite

Why it ranks first here

In Scarlet and Violet singles, Smogon’s Dragonite analysis highlights its potential as a setup sweeper, its useful coverage options and its defensive profile. Multiscale can help it find an opportunity to set up by reducing damage when Dragonite is at full HP. Together, those qualities make it a flexible threat rather than a Pokémon that relies on only one attack or matchup. Read the Scarlet and Violet Dragonite analysis for the competitive context.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet Double Pack - Nintendo Switch
  • If you purchase either the physical or digital double pack, you will receive a 200 Poké Ball bonus via download codes* that can be entered in the Mystery Gift** feature in your game!
  • The packaged version of the double pack includes 1 physical Pokémon Scarlet game and 1 physical Pokémon Violet game
  • Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities
  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea

What the placement does not mean

This is not proof that Dragonite is the best non-Legendary Dragon in every generation, game mode or tournament ruleset. Different available moves, team formats and eligibility rules change how a Pokémon performs. The cited analysis supports a strong Scarlet and Violet singles case, not an all-series championship.

2. Dragapult

Why it belongs near the top of the conversation

Dragapult has Dragon/Ghost typing. The official Pokédex lists Clear Body and Infiltrator as its abilities, giving it distinct ability options to consider when building around it. Its typing and ability choices make it a useful comparison with Dragonite, but the available sources do not establish that it outranks Dragonite in Scarlet and Violet singles.

Pokémon Scarlet - Nintendo Switch - Standard Edition
  • New Pokémon to Discover - Learn new details about Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly—the three Pokémon from which you’ll choose your first partner—along with other wonderful new Pokémon, including the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon!
  • The World of Pokémon Has Evolved - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet offer an open-world experience that only the Pokémon series can deliver—one welcoming even to newcomers to the series.
  • You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
  • A Deeper Experience with Multiplayer* Gameplay - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet allow multiplayer gameplay with up to four players. Along with series staples, such as trading and battling Pokémon, you will be able to explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players. You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family, opening the door to an adventure more precious and fun than ever!
  • Meet the characters - As one of the main characters, you’ll set off on your adventure. Your outfit will vary depending on whether you play Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Who knows what kind of story awaits you? For the first time in the series, one of two different professors will appear in your game depending on the version you choose to play.

Check Dragapult’s official Pokédex entry for its listed type and abilities. Typing affects which attacks it resists or is vulnerable to, so compare those matchups in the specific game and team context rather than treating all Dragon-types as interchangeable.

3. Garchomp

Garchomp is another familiar non-Legendary Dragon-type to consider, but the cited evidence does not provide a direct, apples-to-apples Scarlet and Violet singles comparison against Dragonite or Dragapult. Its relative position will depend on the format and team role; this ranking does not claim a measured third-place result.

Pokémon Scarlet/Pokémon Violet Expansion Pass: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero (Retail Version) Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Only one code for a Hisuian Zoroark can be used in either the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. Upon purchase of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, an email with your code will be sent to the email address registered to your Nintendo Account. From the in-game menu, go to the Poké Portal, then select Mystery Gift, select Get with Code/Password, and then enter your code.
  • The Mystery Gift option can be found within the Poké Portal menu option in the X menu after you unlock the feature in the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. (This occurs after about 1 to 1.5 hours of gameplay, though individual gameplay time may vary.) An internet connection and a Nintendo Account is required to redeem the item in game. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Each item can only be redeemed once.

4. Salamence

Salamence is also an eligible candidate, but the sources used here do not establish its competitive standing relative to the other Pokémon on this list. A responsible all-species ranking would need to compare the same game, rules and criteria across all candidates, rather than infer battle strength from familiarity or popularity.

5. Hydreigon

Hydreigon rounds out this shortlist of recognizable candidates. Its inclusion is not a claim that it occupies a proven fifth place: the available evidence does not settle an exact order for every non-Legendary Dragon-type. For a serious competitive choice, consult analyses for the precise game and format you plan to play.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus - US Version
  • Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
  • Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
  • Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
  • Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

How to choose between Dragonite, Dragapult, Garchomp and others

  • Start with the ruleset. Official tournament eligibility and regulations define what can be used in sanctioned play; a Pokémon’s availability in one format does not guarantee it is legal in another. See the Play! Pokémon tournament rules and resources.
  • Compare roles, not just species names. Ask whether your team needs a setup threat, particular coverage, a defensive option or a different matchup profile.
  • Check type and ability interactions. Dragapult’s Dragon/Ghost typing and Clear Body or Infiltrator, for example, create different considerations from Dragonite’s Multiscale-focused setup case.
  • Use format-specific analysis. Smogon’s Scarlet and Violet Dragon-type page provides competitive context for that format; it is community analysis, not an official franchise-wide ranking.
  • For a story playthrough, rank for the game you are playing. Availability, move access and the opponents you face can matter more than competitive singles arguments.

Are Dragon-type Pokémon cards an option for collectors?

Yes. Official Pokémon card checklists include Dragonite, Salamence, Hydreigon and Garchomp, so cards featuring these Pokémon are a genuine collector or gift option. The checklists establish that cards exist; they do not show current shop inventory or make cards evidence of a Pokémon’s battle ranking. See the official Pokémon Trading Card Game page.
