Planet Zoo is currently rated Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. That means it can work but may need manual configuration; the rating does not guarantee that every update, save, or Deck setup will be crash-free. If it keeps crashing, work through the steps below in order, changing one setting at a time.
1. Update SteamOS and restart your Deck
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available update, then restart the Steam Deck.
- Launch Planet Zoo again and check whether the same crash occurs.
Steam recommends checking for system updates and restarting when an app is unstable. These are general Steam Deck troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed Planet Zoo-specific fix. Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide.
2. Close third-party Desktop Mode applications
If you installed third-party apps in Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, restart the Deck, and try the game again. This helps check whether another application is contributing to instability; it does not establish that a particular app is the cause.
3. Inspect Planet Zoo’s compatibility settings
- In your Steam Library, select Planet Zoo and open its Properties.
- Choose Compatibility and check whether a compatibility tool is being forced.
- If Proton needs to be enabled, Steam’s guide recommends trying the latest Proton version. Retry the game before changing anything else.
If you test another Proton option, change only that setting and then retry. This makes it easier to tell whether the change affected the crash; it is a troubleshooting method, not an official guarantee of a fix. Steam’s troubleshooting guide.

4. Lower the graphics settings
Try a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings, then see whether the game remains stable. Steam lists graphics adjustments as a general performance troubleshooting step. It may help if instability is related to load, but it is not a proven remedy for every Planet Zoo crash.
5. Check whether the problem is only Workshop connectivity
If Planet Zoo itself runs but you cannot connect to Workshop, treat that separately from a crash. Frontier’s article updated October 1, 2026 addresses Workshop connection trouble on SteamOS/Steam Deck with the latest Proton version. It directs users to update Compatibility settings through Manage > Properties; its scope is Workshop connectivity, not general crashing. Frontier’s SteamOS/Steam Deck Workshop troubleshooting.

6. Verify game files, but skip Windows-only fixes
Frontier’s Planet Zoo crash and performance guide is written for PC and includes Windows-specific instructions. Its general suggestion to verify game files through Steam may be relevant on Deck, but do not follow its Windows driver, Windows Update, or other Windows-only steps as if they applied to SteamOS. The guide also discusses overlays and antivirus in a PC context, so do not assume those directions map directly to the Deck. Frontier’s Planet Zoo PC troubleshooting guide.
7. Gather details and contact support if it still crashes
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, note what happened immediately before the crash and contact Frontier or Steam through their official support routes. Useful details include:
