Path of Exile’s live status is unverified here, so older outage reports cannot tell you whether it is down right now. Check for a current notice from Grinding Gear Games (GGG), then use the checks below to distinguish a possible game-side problem from Steam authentication or a local connection issue.
How to check whether Path of Exile is down
- Look for a current GGG announcement. Check GGG’s official announcements or support channels for a notice that matches the time and symptoms you are seeing. No current official notice means the status is unconfirmed, not necessarily that the game is working.
- Try another gateway. Note whether the same error occurs on one gateway or several. A difference can help narrow down the connection path, but failure across gateways alone does not prove a global outage.
- Check Steam status if you play through Steam. Steam authentication can fail separately from the game itself. Standalone-client players should not assume Steam is part of their connection problem.
Community posts can help you recognize symptoms, but they are not authoritative live status reports. A Path of Exile forum thread titled “Official GGG/POE Server Status Web Page” is a player discussion, not an official status page; a player’s report or a Reddit thread likewise cannot establish the scope or cause of an outage.
What your error may indicate
“Unable to connect to login server” or “connection timeout”
These phrases describe a failed connection, not its cause. Check for a current GGG notice and compare gateways before making major changes to your computer or router. Similar login-timeout reports appeared in a Path of Exile technical-support post in October 2025, including a gateway selector stuck on “Downloading…,” but that individual report does not confirm a wider incident or a known fix.

Record which gateway is selected and test another one. If the symptom persists, note the time and platform and check for a current official notice. An older player report of the same wording does not show that today’s problem has the same cause.

“Server Verification Failed” on Steam
Steam says this error means the game server cannot contact Steam Authentication Servers. Its guidance is to try several game servers, check Steam status if none works, and then investigate Steam client connectivity and the local connection. This applies to the Steam authentication path; it should not be treated as a diagnosis for the standalone client. See Steam’s Server Verification Failed guidance.
“Connection Failure”
Players use this phrase for connection complaints, but the wording alone does not identify a server outage or a local fault. Compare gateways and platform path, then check current official information. A July 2026 Reddit discussion contains player reports using this wording; comments and votes do not establish outage scope or cause.

Separate a game-side issue from a local connection problem
Compare the scope
- One gateway behaves differently: record that result and continue checking; it is a clue, not proof of a gateway outage.
- Several gateways fail: check GGG announcements and, if applicable, Steam status. Multiple failures still do not by themselves verify a global outage.
Compare the platform path
If you use Steam and see an authentication or server-verification error, check Steam’s service status and connection guidance. If you use the standalone client, focus on GGG notices, gateway results, and your own network rather than Steam authentication.
Test the local network
If you are on Wi-Fi or a powerline adapter, temporarily test a direct wired connection to the router. Steam recommends this as a way to isolate wireless or router-related problems. Review router and firewall conditions if the wired test changes the result; avoid risky security changes based on a single community post. A wired test can diagnose a local link, but it cannot fix a server-side outage. Steam’s general network connectivity troubleshooting also recommends checking Steam server status and firewalls.

A historical GGG incident is not proof of a current outage
On March 12, 2026, GGG published “An Update on Recent Server Instability.” The company said repeated disconnections since the 3.28 launch were linked to persistent, targeted DDoS attacks against its game backend, and that server providers were deploying mitigations. GGG said, “This will not be considered resolved until these disconnections stop.” That statement describes the situation GGG reported at the time; it does not establish that the attacks or disconnections continued on October 8, 2026.

- The exact error text, such as “Unable to connect to login server” or “Server Verification Failed.”
- When it happened, including your time zone if practical.
- The gateway or gateways tested.
- Whether you use Steam or the standalone client.
- Whether a direct wired connection changes the result and whether other services work normally.
This information helps distinguish a platform, gateway, or local-network symptom without assuming the cause.
