Critics praised its presentation and combat ideas but often faulted its repetitive dungeons and low difficulty. Availability is also a consideration: publisher Acttil ended Steam sales on February 29, 2024, while current PlayStation Vita Store availability is not established.
What kind of game is Ray Gigant?
Ray Gigant is a dungeon-crawler RPG developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment and Experience and published by Acttil. Its structure combines first-person dungeon exploration with a stronger narrative and visual-novel emphasis than many genre peers. Acttil’s overview describes a near-future Earth attacked by Gigants. Protagonist Ichiya Amakaze defeats one using a power called Yorigami, then loses control and destroys the city he was trying to protect. Acttil’s game overview provides the release and story details.
The western release was May 3, 2016, on PlayStation Vita and August 10, 2016, on Steam. Acttil listed the Vita release as PSN-only and compatible with PS TV. The Vita edition has Japanese voice acting and English subtitles; Steam supports Japanese voice acting with English and Japanese subtitles. The publisher information does not establish a physical Vita game edition.
What do reviews say?
Metacritic’s 2026 snapshot lists a 72 Metascore based on 14 critic reviews, categorized “Mixed or Average,” and a 7.8 user score from 30 ratings, categorized “Generally Favorable.” Its displayed critic distribution is five positive reviews (36%), nine mixed (64%), and no negative reviews. These are modest-sized samples, so the scores are a useful snapshot rather than a definitive measure of how every player will respond. Metacritic’s Ray Gigant page shows the aggregation.

What critics liked
Review excerpts commonly praise the story, characters, visual presentation, and a distinctive combat system. The narrative focus can make the game a more approachable entry point for players new to dungeon crawlers, particularly if they prefer a guided adventure over a demanding test of mapping and combat mastery. That is a recurring view, not a unanimous verdict.
What critics found weaker
The most practical reservations are repetitive or bland dungeon layouts and comparatively low difficulty. If you play dungeon crawlers chiefly for varied level design, exploration complexity, or a punishing challenge, those shortcomings may matter more than the story and presentation strengths.

Brash Games’ May 16, 2016 review captured the split: “The dungeons are undoubtedly bland and, by genre standards, there is no getting around the fact that, Ray Gigant is relatively easy, but if you’re looking for a more story driven adventure, one with great characters and fantastic production values, you won’t go far wrong with, Experience Inc.’s unique and largely successful coming together of visual novel and dungeon crawler.” The quotation is the publication’s assessment, not a consensus statement.

Can you still buy Ray Gigant?
Acttil announced that Steam sales would end effective February 29, 2024, saying its contractual agreement with the license holder had concluded. Its notice does not establish any later Steam availability or authorized alternative purchase route. Acttil’s Steam sales announcement gives the reason and effective date.
Acttil described the Vita release as PSN-only, but current PlayStation Store availability is not established. Do not assume that a Vita listing is still purchasable; check the relevant store in your region before planning to play. A confirmed Vita release is not evidence of a boxed game edition.
