What makes Riven (2024) different from the original?
The original Riven, released in 1997, framed its islands through a sequence of fixed views. The remake replaces that constrained movement with free navigation through a real-time 3D environment. That changes the rhythm of exploration: you can move through spaces rather than advance between set viewpoints, and the environments have a more continuous sense of scale. The change is more than a camera upgrade. Cyan says it refreshed puzzles, added characters, and expanded the story and world in the remake (launch announcement). Richard Vander Wende, whom Cyan identifies as a key original creative contributor, said the team revisited the world’s backstory and characters, correcting discrepancies and filling in parts that needed development. That helps explain why this version should be approached as a reinterpretation and expansion, not a museum-faithful reproduction.
How does it feel to play?
Exploration remains the point
Riven is built around looking closely, forming theories, and testing what the environment is telling you. Its appeal is less about constant action than about gradually understanding how places, mechanisms, and clues fit together. The remake’s free movement makes this act of investigation more embodied than in the original, but it does not turn the game into a conventional action adventure.

Puzzles and pacing
The remake refreshes puzzles rather than preserving every solution unchanged. That gives veterans a reason to observe rather than rely solely on memory, while the slower pace still asks players to tolerate uncertainty and revisit details. If you prefer explicit objectives, frequent hints, or quick puzzle payoffs, Riven’s deliberate structure may feel demanding. The satisfying moments come from connecting clues yourself, not from being hurried toward the next set piece.
Atmosphere and story
Riven’s strange, carefully constructed world is still its strongest draw. Expanded narrative material and added characters give the remake room to develop the setting beyond what returning players already know. The visual presentation supports that sense of place, but the game’s atmosphere depends just as much on taking time to notice what is unusual or out of place.

Should original fans play it?
Yes, especially if you are interested in seeing how the world and puzzle design translate into free-roaming 3D. Familiarity with the 1997 game may help you recognize what has been reworked, but it should not be treated as a walkthrough: the refreshed puzzles mean old solutions may not carry over. The remake’s additions also make it more than a nostalgia exercise. Go in expecting a revisiting of Riven’s ideas rather than an exact replay.
Can newcomers play without knowing Myst?
The available product information establishes that Riven is a remake of the 1997 adventure and that it expands its own story and world; it does not establish how much prior Myst knowledge a new player needs. A newcomer can approach it as a puzzle adventure centered on exploring an unfamiliar place, but should not expect the game to function as a comprehensive introduction to the broader Myst story. Is VR required, and where can you play?
No. VR is one way to play, not a requirement. Steam lists single-player and VR support, while flat-screen versions are also available. Cyan announced the remake for Windows via Steam and GOG, Mac via the Mac App Store, and standalone play on Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3. Cyan’s FAQ also lists PCVR through Steam and GOG and says those purchases include Windows, Mac, and PCVR options; check the relevant storefront for current availability and compatibility.

Is Riven (2024) worth playing?
For players who enjoy patient environmental puzzles and atmospheric exploration, the remake makes a strong case: it gives Riven a newly navigable 3D world and adds material without abandoning the series’ deliberate, observational character. Its main trade-off is the same quality that defines it: progress depends on attention and deduction, and the remake’s revisions mean even longtime fans must engage with it as a new version.
Steam’s listing showed 93% positive English user reviews from 2,289 reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026 (Steam listing). That is a dated, changing user-review snapshot, not a critics’ score. Cyan’s launch announcement also cited 15 million combined worldwide copies sold for Myst and Riven; the figure is for both games together and does not state Riven’s individual sales.
