Patrick’s Parabox received a favorable critical reception for turning familiar box-pushing into recursive puzzles: boxes can contain other boxes, and a box can become a puzzle space in its own right. Metacritic’s PC critic page shows an 84 Metascore and labels it “Generally Favorable.” The critic-review count differs between Metacritic pages, so the score is best read with that snapshot caveat.
What critics think of Patrick’s Parabox
Metacritic’s PC critic page displays an 84 Metascore, a “Generally Favorable” label, and nine critic-review entries. Its title overview also displays an 84, but says it is based on seven critic reviews. Those are page-specific counts captured in 2026, not a settled single total. The critic page marks all nine displayed reviews positive. Metacritic’s PC critic reviews and its title overview show the discrepancy.
The shared enthusiasm is for the central idea and how far the game develops it. Critics describe a clever, carefully constructed puzzle game whose simple premise grows into increasingly intricate challenges. The main reservation is about focus: players who want a broader set of rewards or reasons to replay may find the experience narrow.
Why the recursive puzzles stand out
Patrick’s Parabox builds on Sokoban, the classic style of puzzle in which players push boxes around a grid. Its twist is that boxes can contain further spaces and puzzles. A box is not merely an object to move; it can also be a room or stage that the player enters and manipulates. That recursive relationship lets one puzzle nest inside another and turns a basic action into a source of surprising complications.

Review excerpts repeatedly highlight the ingenuity of this design. Games.cz points to the paradoxical puzzles and use of infinity; IGN Japan describes the discovery that a box can itself function as a stage. Multiplayer.it praises the way a small initial idea expands into larger, more interesting puzzles. Taken together, the comments suggest that the appeal lies less in a long list of unrelated mechanics than in the careful development of one unusually fertile rule.
What critics praise about the puzzle design
Mechanics that build on one another
Critics emphasize gradual escalation: the game introduces an idea, then finds new ways to combine or complicate it. That structure can make a later puzzle feel like a genuine extension of what the player has learned rather than a wholly separate challenge. Multiplayer.it also notes optional levels for players looking for extra difficulty.

A substantial set of handcrafted challenges
Slant Magazine’s review, listed by Metacritic as dated April 11, 2022, refers to more than 350 handcrafted puzzles. That is the reviewer’s stated figure, rather than an independently verified count. Vandal calls the game especially smart for puzzle fans and singles out Sokoban enthusiasts. The Vandal excerpt listed by Metacritic, dated April 1, 2022, says: “This is an incredibly smart puzzle game that you should try if you like the genre and, particularly, sokoban games.”
Difficulty that rewards working through the rules
The favorable excerpts also describe the challenges as inventive and well balanced. The recursive premise can become mentally demanding, but the progression gives players new applications of familiar rules to reason through. Optional puzzles offer an additional challenge without being described as necessary to the main experience.

What might not work for every player
The clearest caveat in the reviews is that the game stays tightly focused on its puzzle hook. Edge’s review notes that players looking for an additional hook may find the game wanting, while still praising the ingenuity of its challenges. INVEN criticizes the limited reward system as a factor that may not encourage repeated play.
That distinction matters: the criticism is not that the puzzles lack ideas, but that puzzle-solving is doing nearly all the work. If you want a broader progression loop or frequent incentives beyond tackling the next challenge, the focused design may feel spare. If the pleasure is figuring out a tricky rule and seeing it used in a new way, that focus is also the point.

Is Patrick’s Parabox like Baba Is You?
Both games appeal to players who enjoy reasoning through unusual puzzle rules, and one critic explicitly recommends Patrick’s Parabox to people who like Baba Is You. The comparison is useful as a pointer to an audience, not as evidence that the games play the same way: the review material here centers on Patrick’s Parabox’s recursive box-pushing and nested spaces.
Who is Patrick’s Parabox for?
- Good fit: Players who enjoy Sokoban, spatial reasoning, nested puzzles, and mechanics that deepen through combinations.
- Potential mismatch: Players who want a varied adventure around the puzzles, a strong reward loop, or replay incentives beyond solving more challenges.
- Presentation: A PS5 Metacritic result excerpt describes the game as cerebral and cozy, praising its puzzles and calming presentation; that returned excerpt does not identify the critic.
