To reach and beat Bonetail, treat the Pit of 100 Trials as a resource-management challenge, not a sprint: stock healing items, upgrade your partners, and make each tenth-floor checkpoint a deliberate decision about whether to continue or pay for a Mover. Floor 100 is the boss room, not a free rest stop. The route and reward details below are drawn from guides for the GameCube original and the Nintendo Switch remake; Switch-only changes are identified.

Prepare before entering

The Pit has no dependable free healing or saving during the climb. Charlieton may appear and sell items, but do not build a plan around finding the item you need. Nintendo Life’s Pit of 100 Trials guide recommends bringing restorative items, fully upgrading partners, and carrying coins for Movers. Its suggested level of 30 is a guide recommendation, not an entry requirement or guarantee of an easy run.

  • Pack for recovery: Bring HP and FP restoration, plus items that can help if the party is in trouble. Preserve some recovery for the later floors rather than spending it all on minor damage.
  • Upgrade partners: Stronger partner options make it easier to manage enemy formations and keep pressure on dangerous targets.
  • Bring coins: Movers can shorten the climb at a cost. Coins also give you flexibility if Charlieton appears with supplies.
  • Check your build: Badge slots spent on damage or action-command advantages are slots not spent on defense or status protection. There is no single best setup for every player; your item stock and comfort with action commands matter.

For additional inventory context, StrategyWiki’s Pit of 100 Trials page also covers the challenge and version details. Avoid assuming one universal carry-capacity figure across editions.

Use the ten-floor breaks to manage risk

The route is organized into groups of ten floors, with a checkpoint at each tenth floor except floor 100. According to Nintendo Life’s Pit guide, Movers may offer paid travel at these points. A ride can preserve HP, FP, and time by avoiding fights, but it also means passing up those encounters’ experience and coins. Choose based on the state of your party and supplies, not simply because a ride is available.

Choice What you gain What you give up
Continue on foot More fights, with opportunities to earn experience and coins. More exposure to damage and additional use of healing resources.
Pay a Mover A shorter route that can conserve time and party resources. The ride costs coins and skips fights that could provide experience and coins.

Floor 100 is different: it is Bonetail’s room, not another ordinary checkpoint. Entering it does not mean you can count on a free recovery before the fight.

Know the milestone rewards

Nintendo Life’s guide lists these rewards at the following floors. Check the item’s effect and your current build when deciding how to use each reward; a milestone item does not remove the need to manage supplies for the remaining climb.

Floor Listed reward
10 Sleepy Stomp
20 Fire Drive
30 Zap Tap
40 Pity Flower
50 Strange Sack
90 Lucky Day

The guide says Strange Sack increases carry capacity by 20. Since inventory descriptions and capacities can vary by version or reference, rely on the in-game description for your edition rather than assuming a base capacity.

Choose targets by threat, not by a fixed script

Enemy formations vary, so prioritize the enemies most likely to make the fight expensive. Nintendo Life’s floor guide calls out Lakitus, which can spawn Spinies, and charging Hyper Clefts, whose attacks can deal notable damage. Removing or interrupting a threat before it acts can prevent a small encounter from consuming several turns of recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Deal with Lakitus early when their Spiny spawning is likely to compound the fight.
  • Watch charging Hyper Clefts and respond before their attack lands rather than allowing them time to build pressure.
  • Use safe first strikes to gain an advantage where the formation permits it.
  • Consider Spike Shield when spiked enemies are a concern.

Do not follow a floor-by-floor plan so rigidly that you ignore the enemies actually in front of you. The useful question is which enemy can create the most damage or extra actions if left alone.

Beat Bonetail on floor 100

Bonetail has 200 HP. Nintendo Life’s Bonetail guide, published May 24, 2024, reports that the boss begins healing 20 HP at a time every few turns once its HP drops below 100. That makes the final stretch a damage-and-recovery test: preserve Star Power where possible, keep Mario healthy before entering, and avoid letting the fight drag on without a plan to sustain damage.

Before the fight

  • Use floor 99 to assess Mario’s HP, FP, partner condition, and remaining restorative items.
  • A level-up on floor 99 may restore HP and FP, but do not assume one will occur at a useful moment.
  • Keep enough Star Power available to use a recovery option such as Sweet Feast when it is needed, while weighing that against spending Star Power on offense.

During the fight

  • Use Power Lift to improve damage and help shorten the battle.
  • Use Sweet Feast strategically when the party needs recovery; choosing it means not spending that Star Power elsewhere at that moment.
  • Swap a weakened partner out before that partner is knocked out, so you retain useful actions and options.
  • Equip Feeling Fine if available to resist status ailments.
  • Close Call and Pretty Lucky can give Mario a chance to evade attacks, but their luck effects are probabilistic, not dependable protection.

The Switch guide reports a 999-coin clear reward and a Return Postage Badge in the chest. Treat the coin reward as Switch-specific; the source does not establish it as a reward for every edition.

What changes on a repeat run in the Switch version?

After a successful first clear, the Nintendo Switch remake adds a Mover at the Pit entrance that offers a ride to floor 50 for 300 coins. This shortcut applies to a subsequent run; it does not skip the remaining floors or Bonetail. It is most useful when the value of saving time and resources outweighs the experience and coins you would earn from the skipped fights. See Nintendo Life’s Pit guide for its version-specific route notes.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - Nintendo Switch (Renewed)
  • This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
  • Join Mario on an epic paper-adventure to collect the Crystal Stars before the X-Nauts do!

The Switch post-game Whacka encounter is separate from simply clearing Bonetail. Nintendo Life’s Whacka guide says the player must beat the main story and clear Bonetail, then receive the “RDM Extra Issue” email; further game actions may also be needed. Do not expect the encounter to trigger immediately after the Pit clear.
