In a 2021 interview marking Halo’s 20th anniversary, Steve Downes called playing Master Chief for two decades “surreal.” He reflected on how he brings humanity to the character, how meeting fans shaped his understanding of the Chief, and why recording Halo 4 alongside Cortana voice actor Jen Taylor remains a favorite experience.
Why 20 years as Master Chief felt surreal
Downes’s run as the voice of Master Chief began with Halo: Combat Evolved, which launched alongside the original Xbox on November 15, 2001. By the time MobileSyrup interviewed him on October 26, 2021, he had voiced the character across two decades. “It’s surreal to have a character that I’ve played for 20 years,” he said.
He put that continuity in perspective by comparing it with his long career as a radio DJ. The milestone was remarkable, but it also sat alongside a professional life in which he had spent decades behind a microphone.
How Downes approached the character
For Downes, making Master Chief convincing meant finding a human point of entry into a science-fiction setting. “You still try to come at it from a real place — from a human place,” he said. That approach gave him a way to ground the character’s performance even when the story and world were far removed from everyday life.

What fan conversations added
Conversations with fans at conventions gave Downes another perspective on the Chief and the role. He described those encounters as a source of joy: “The whole convention thing has been a real joy.” Hearing how people connected with the character helped inform his understanding and portrayal of him.
The Halo recording experience he singled out
Downes pointed to Halo 4 as a personal favorite, especially the chance to record with Jen Taylor, the voice of Cortana, in the same room. “I always go back to Halo 4 because it was the first time that [Cortana actor] Jen Taylor and I worked together in the same room doing the same stuff.” He particularly remembered the emotionally charged scenes involving Cortana.
Sharing a room made the work a live collaboration between the two performers, rather than separate recordings later brought together. For Downes, that connection made those scenes stand out.

What Downes said about Halo Infinite before its release
Downes’s comments about Halo Infinite in the interview were pre-release expectations, not a review. The game was then scheduled to launch on December 8, 2021, and he discussed the experience of working on it during the pandemic.
With sessions happening in different locations, Downes adapted his home studio to match recording conditions elsewhere. He also described recording in a closet at home. The changes show how the pandemic altered the practical setup for a performance that had once involved working alongside other actors in person.
