The Wii U itself did not become unusable when Nintendo ended its online services. The eShop stopped selling and distributing new content in 2023; official online play and other Wii U software functions that use online communication ended on April 8, 2024. Offline modes remain playable, and Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded and updated “for the foreseeable future.”
Can I still play Wii U online?
No—not through Nintendo’s official online services. On April 8, 2024, at 5 p.m. Pacific, Nintendo ended online play and other software functions that use online communication for Wii U games. The affected functions include online co-op, internet rankings, and data distribution. Nintendo’s online-service notice gives the cutoff and examples.
Offline game features and modes remain usable. A game may therefore still work on the console while particular network-dependent features no longer do.
What changed, and when?
The Wii U’s digital storefront and its online gameplay services ended on different dates. Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation Q&A records the purchasing and account changes; its online-service notice covers the later end of online functionality.

Nintendo said the eShop closure was “part of the natural lifecycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time.” The closure applied to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops; Nintendo said the Switch eShop was not affected.
Can I still download games I already bought?
Nintendo says previously purchased software and downloadable content can still be redownloaded, and software updates can still be downloaded “for the foreseeable future.” Nintendo has not given an end date for these downloads, so this is current guidance—not a guarantee of permanent access.

- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
That distinction matters: the eShop no longer accepts new purchases or free-content downloads, but Nintendo’s stated ongoing redownload and update availability is separate from buying content. If you rely on a download, do not assume it will remain available indefinitely.
What can I do with a Wii U now?
- Play games’ offline modes and features.
- Use Nintendo’s currently stated redownload and update availability for eligible purchases, subject to its “for the foreseeable future” qualification.
- Revisit physical games and other content already available to you, while recognizing that online-dependent features may no longer function.
If you are considering a used Nintendo Wii U to play offline, check what is included before buying: the condition, GamePad, cables, region, and seller support can vary. You cannot use the Wii U eShop to make new purchases.

What about unofficial online services?
Nintendo says services that imitate Wii U network features without its authorization are unsupported and may carry unexpected security risks. That is Nintendo’s warning; it does not endorse or certify community-run alternatives.
