Bokuten: Why I Became an Angel is a relationship-focused visual novel built around an uncomfortable question: is keeping a couple together always the kindest choice? You guide an angel’s mission to help couples, but the story treats reconciliation as a consequential decision—not an automatic happy ending. Expect a dramatic, emotionally difficult story, and read the game’s mature-content notice before buying.

What is Bokuten: Why I Became an Angel about?

Developed by OVERDRIVE and published on Steam by MangaGamer and Sunflower Ocean, Bokuten: Why I Became an Angel was released on December 19, 2019. Its premise begins with an accident: the protagonist shoots an angel out of the sky, then takes on the angel’s mission of helping couples.

The central choice is not simply how to make a relationship work. You decide whether a couple should rekindle its romance or be allowed to separate. The official Steam description presents these outcomes as complex and consequential, with the protagonist’s own love life affected by the choices. That gives the story a more difficult focus than a straightforward romance: helping someone does not necessarily mean preserving their relationship.

Should you play Bokuten?

Play it if you want relationship drama

The game’s appeal is its emotionally charged premise and the moral uncertainty built into its choices. If you enjoy visual novels that ask what is best for people rather than treating romantic success as the sole measure of a happy ending, Bokuten offers a clear reason to try it.

Consider another visual novel if you want a light romance

The store description characterizes the story as dramatic and emotional. Its subject matter includes abuse, suicide, murder, and death, so this is not an uncomplicated comfort romance. The Steam content notice is worth checking in full if any of those subjects may be difficult for you.

How does Bokuten handle choices?

The premise makes the player weigh whether a couple should stay together, but the available product information does not establish a branching map, the number of endings, or how much each decision changes the story. What it does establish is the intended tension: choices have consequences, and the game questions whether rekindling a relationship is always the best outcome.

Content notice: what to know before buying

Steam’s content notice lists coarse or derogatory language, sexual references, alcohol, smoking, blood, violence, domestic abuse, suicide, murder, and death. It also notes artistic depictions of sexual conduct and states that characters involved in sexual conduct are adults. Use the listing’s notice to decide whether the material suits you.

Languages, audio, and editions

The evidenced option is the Steam digital release. Steam lists English interface and subtitles, Japanese full audio, and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitles. It also lists a digital soundtrack and vocal collection, plus an OVA and album, as separate DLC; the listing does not describe these as included with the base game.

NookGaming’s review reports that the Steam release omits some mature content found in the MangaGamer release. The exact differences are not established here, and edition details may change, so check the current publisher listings if that distinction matters to your purchase.

Verdict

Bokuten: Why I Became an Angel is best approached as a difficult relationship drama, not a promise that every romance can—or should—be saved. Its premise gives the player a meaningful emotional dilemma, while its mature themes make it important to check the content notice first. If you want a visual novel willing to question what a happy ending means, it is worth considering.
