Revenge of the Savage Planet Creative Director Says Game Pass Devalues Games

Alex Hutchinson criticized day-one subscription launches and proposed a one-year wait, while explaining why Raccoon Logic put Revenge of the Savage Planet on Game Pass at launch.

Alex Hutchinson, creative director at Raccoon Logic, argued in a June 2025 interview that day-one subscription launches can make players less willing to pay for games. He proposed waiting a year after release before adding games to subscription services. The complication: Revenge of the Savage Planet itself launched on Xbox Game Pass on May 8, 2025. Hutchinson described that choice as a bet on exposure, not evidence that Game Pass had caused an industry-wide decline in sales.

What Hutchinson said about Game Pass and game value

In a June 9, 2025 interview with Gamer Social Club, Hutchinson said content had been “devalued” and that people were less willing to pay for it. He warned that this could mean fewer games being made and more studios closing. Those are his views and forecast; the interview does not establish that subscriptions caused those outcomes across the industry.

His proposed remedy was a one-year release window: “Personally, I think the whole industry should agree to only allow games on subscription services a year after release.” He likened the sequence to established windows between theatrical releases, home video, television and streaming. This was a suggestion, not an existing industry rule or announced Game Pass policy.

Why his own game launched on Game Pass day one

Revenge of the Savage Planet arrived on Xbox Game Pass on May 8, 2025. Xbox Wire confirmed that members would receive the Standard Edition on launch day; that announcement confirms launch availability, not the game’s current catalog status. The game was also sold on PlayStation and PC, so the Game Pass launch did not mean every version was included.

Hutchinson said Raccoon Logic hoped Game Pass exposure would lead subscribers to buy the game’s add-on pack or prompt friends on other platforms to purchase it so they could play together. At the time of the interview, he said that hoped-for conversion had not appeared “or at least not yet.”

What the early player and sales comments do—and do not—show

The interview reported that the game had passed one million players after a few weeks. That is a player count, not a sales figure. Hutchinson said most of the game’s traffic had come through Game Pass, while also describing sales as good and noting rapid wishlist growth. These are his statements in the interview, not audited sales data.

Taken together, his comments describe a trade-off Raccoon Logic was still assessing: subscription access brought reach, while the studio hoped some of that audience would generate additional purchases. The interview does not disclose the deal’s financial terms or establish that Game Pass alone determined the game’s sales performance. GameSpot’s June 10, 2025 report likewise notes that deal terms are not public and summarizes Hutchinson’s view that subscription checks had been more consequential for some games in the past.

The specific claim is about release timing, not access in general

Hutchinson did not argue in the cited interview that subscriptions should never include games. His proposed change was to delay entry until a year after launch. In his account, that would preserve a period in which players could buy a new release before it joined a subscription library. Whether that approach would improve sales or studio finances is not demonstrated by the interview.

The game’s design and platform context also matter when interpreting its reach. PlayStation Blog described it as a sci-fi co-op adventure built around exploration, scanning, cataloging, crafting and upgrades, with four planets and a secret fifth, plus single-player, split-screen and online cross-play modes. Those details explain the product being discussed; they do not prove or disprove Hutchinson’s claim about subscriptions.

What is established about the game’s Game Pass availability

Xbox Wire’s May 5, 2025 launch article said Game Pass members would get the Standard Edition on May 8. That supports the day-one launch fact only. The sources cited here do not establish whether Revenge of the Savage Planet remains in the Game Pass catalog now.
