RiME is a single-player puzzle adventure about exploring an island, solving environmental puzzles, and reaching a tower. This guide covers how to read the game’s cues, how to approach optional secrets, and which platforms are confirmed here. It does not give room-by-room solutions: detailed puzzle sequences have not been verified for this guide.
What kind of game is RiME?
Released in 2017, RiME was developed by Tequila Works, with QLOC also credited on the Steam listing. You control a boy who awakens on an island after a storm and explores its ruins and wildlife, with a fox serving as a guide. The central aim is to make your way toward a tower and uncover more of the story along the way.

Expect exploration, platforming, and environmental puzzles rather than combat-focused action. The game’s official store descriptions emphasize a single-player adventure shaped by sound, light, shadow, perspective, and timing. Creative Director Raúl Rubio Munárriz described the intended perspective as seeing the world through the eyes of a child in a PlayStation Blog announcement dated March 8, 2017.
How to approach RiME’s puzzles
Read the environment before trying random actions
Look for visual or audible cues that connect a nearby object, path, or structure to the space around it. RiME uses sound, projected light and shadow, perspective, movement, and timing as puzzle elements. If an apparent route is blocked, scan the surrounding area for something that changes what you can see or reach rather than assuming the obstacle requires combat or a special item.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore - Discover the mysterious island at your own pace. Interact with wildlife, search for hidden items or simply take in the sights and sounds.
- Solve Puzzles - Make your way through the ancient ruins and its hidden marvels by solving puzzles with sound, light and shadow projection, perspective, platforming, and even time manipulation.
- Find Secrets - Dive deeper into the boy's backstory by uncovering dozens of secrets and collectables.
- Be Enchanted - Take in a beautiful world inspired by the wonders of the Mediterranean through a fusion of captivating music and colour.
Use movement and timing as part of the puzzle
Some challenges combine platforming with environmental interaction. Observe how a mechanism or projection behaves, then consider whether position, viewpoint, or timing changes the result. The game’s puzzle vocabulary varies, so a tactic that works in one area should not be treated as a universal solution.
Let landmarks and the fox orient you
The fox and prominent island landmarks can help you keep your bearings while exploring. When uncertain where to go, look for a visible landmark or the fox’s direction before retracing every path. Treat these as orientation cues, not guarantees that every nearby secret has been found.

Progression and optional secrets
Keep the main route separate from completion goals
Hidden items and secrets add to the experience and help deepen the boy’s backstory, but they are distinct from the puzzles needed to progress. If your priority is reaching the next area, follow the environmental clues and continue toward the tower; you do not need to assume that every hidden object is a progression requirement.
Search deliberately when you want to find more
When you have time to explore, inspect side paths and spaces that are easy to overlook as you move through the island. Revisit an area if a later perspective or interaction makes it newly meaningful. The available official descriptions confirm that secrets are part of the game, but do not provide a verified item-by-item checklist or exact locations.
