In June 2018, a seven-year-old girl’s avatar was sexually assaulted in a Roblox virtual playground, according to the UK’s Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. A later TechCrunch retrospective reported that hackers had compromised a server and uploaded code that broke Roblox’s rules. TechCrunch says Roblox secured the platform against similar hacks, apologized to parents and banned the hackers. The available accounts describe the incident and response at a high level; they do not provide a forensic explanation of the vulnerability.
What happened in the Roblox incident?
The UK Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse’s 2022 report records that the incident took place in June 2018 and involved a seven-year-old girl’s avatar being sexually assaulted in Roblox’s virtual playground. The report also records Roblox’s contemporaneous explanation: children were unlikely to find such rooms unless they actively sought them, and moderators typically removed them after discovery. That is Roblox’s account as quoted in the inquiry report, not an independent measurement of how often such rooms appeared or how quickly moderation acted. Read the inquiry report.
What did Roblox do after the hack?
TechCrunch’s 2019 retrospective says a single server had been hacked, allowing users to upload code that violated Roblox’s rules. It reports that Roblox secured the platform against similar hacks, apologized to parents and banned the hackers. The account also says the company subsequently launched a digital civility initiative. Read TechCrunch’s retrospective.
This is a retrospective description, not a technical incident report. It does not identify the precise vulnerability, explain how the server was compromised, name the people responsible or reproduce the full text of Roblox’s original 2018 response. The evidence supports describing the response at a high level, not reconstructing the exploit.

What safety measures does Roblox describe today?
In an August 15, 2025 statement responding to a Louisiana attorney general’s lawsuit, Roblox said it had introduced more than 40 features over the preceding year to protect younger users and give parents and caregivers more control. The company named updated parental controls, stricter defaults for users under 13 and content maturity labels. These are Roblox’s descriptions of its own measures, not an independent assessment of how well they work. The company also said, “No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection.” Read Roblox’s statement.
What have outside researchers found about safety gaps?
A Guardian report published April 14, 2025, summarized findings by digital-behaviour experts Revealing Reality. Researchers reported that chat filtering could be circumvented and described a test in which an adult test avatar could ask a five-year-old test avatar for Snapchat details. The Guardian also reported that accounts for users under 13 had been restricted from directly messaging outside experiences since November 2024. These observations point to potential gaps between intended protections and what the researchers observed; they do not show that every experience or account presents the same risk, or that every child will encounter abuse. What the accounts establish—and what they do not
- Established: The inquiry report records a June 2018 assault involving a seven-year-old’s avatar. TechCrunch later described a server hack, Roblox’s reported response and a subsequent digital civility initiative.
- Not established: The precise technical flaw, how the intrusion was carried out, the hackers’ identities, or a complete primary record of Roblox’s original response.
- Keep the evidence in context: Roblox’s statements describe its own actions and features; the inquiry report and the Guardian’s account of researchers’ observations provide additional perspectives, but none amounts to a comprehensive technical audit of platform safety.
