Robyn Miller returned to Riven creatively in 2024, writing new music and consulting on Cyan Worlds’ reimagining. The work also brought him together with his brother, Cyan co-founder Rand Miller, and original Riven game director Richard Vander Wende for a conversation about the world they helped create.
What Robyn Miller did on the Riven remake
Cyan announced on April 9, 2024, that Robyn Miller contributed new music and consulted on the game. His revealed track, “Into the Unknown, Part IV,” is the fourth movement of a larger four-part piece. His role was described as composing and consulting—not as a return to general studio employment.

“Writing the music for Riven was a blast. I hope that fans like the additions,” Miller said in Cyan’s announcement. He also explained that he aimed to evoke the original soundtrack while writing for “an environment that is unique and stands apart from the original Riven.” Cyan’s announcement and Robyn Miller’s comments
How the brothers reunited
Rand Miller, Robyn Miller, and Richard Vander Wende took part in a roundtable on Riven’s worldbuilding. GamesBeat reported that Rand described it as the first time he and Robyn had met in person since the original Riven. “That was kind of crazy. It was the first time we got together in person since Riven. A lot of fun,” Rand said. GamesBeat’s report on the roundtable
#1 Best Overall
The reunion connects the remake with the people behind the original, but it does not mean the new game simply reproduces the old one. Vander Wende described revisiting the setting’s history: “We looked at the backstory that gave rise to the world of Riven, and the characters that inhabited it. We found discrepancies and corrected those, and embellished things that needed to be filled in.” Cyan’s Riven page
How the reimagining differs from the 1997 Riven
Rand and Robyn Miller founded Cyan in 1987. The original Riven: The Sequel to Myst followed in 1997. Cyan presents the new game as a from-the-ground-up reimagining, expanding and changing parts of the experience rather than promising a scene-for-scene restoration.

What the reunion means for Riven’s legacy
Cyan’s April 2024 announcement said combined sales of Myst and Riven had exceeded 15 million copies worldwide. That is a combined figure attributed to Cyan in 2024, not sales for Riven alone.
For the remake, the notable development is the overlap between old and new: Robyn Miller contributed music and consultation, while Rand Miller and Vander Wende helped revisit the setting’s foundations. Cyan’s own description makes clear that the team used that legacy as a starting point for an expanded reimagining.
