In Fallout 4, romance is an optional path that opens through companion affinity and conversations—not a separate menu or item. Seven base-game companions are listed as romanceable: Cait, Curie, Paladin Danse, John Hancock, Robert MacCready, Piper Wright, and Preston Garvey. Porter Gage is an additional option if you have the Nuka-World add-on. The affinity reference lists these options.
Which companions can you romance in Fallout 4?
The affinity reference lists seven romance options in the base game and Porter Gage with the Nuka-World add-on. A character being a companion—or having a high affinity with you—does not by itself mean that romance is available.

The broader companion roster includes characters beyond these romance options. Eligibility, not a companion’s presence or perk, is the key distinction.
How do you romance a companion in Fallout 4?
Build affinity while traveling together, then respond to the companion’s conversations as they arise. Actions and choices can raise or lower a companion’s approval, and increased affinity can unlock further conversations, including flirt and romance dialogue for eligible characters. The broad progression pattern is shared, but the approval triggers and dialogue path are character-specific; there is no guaranteed universal sequence.

- Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
- Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
- New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
- Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
- Travel with the companion. Keep the character as your active companion while you play so they can react to your actions and decisions.
- Make choices that companion approves of. Companions have individual reactions, so an action that earns approval from one may not work with another.
- Respond when affinity conversations become available. Continue the dialogue rather than treating affinity as a meter that automatically completes the romance.
- Complete any progression gate that applies. Personal quests or other character-specific requirements can affect further affinity progression. The affinity reference specifically notes quest requirements for Cait, Curie, and Danse.
- Choose the available flirt or romance dialogue. Romance depends on reaching the relevant conversation; simply traveling together or reaching high affinity does not make every companion romanceable.
For background on the affinity system, see the affinity reference and Prima’s companion guide.
Do you have to romance a companion to get their perk?
No. The affinity reference says a companion’s maximum-affinity perk does not require romance. Romance is a separate relationship choice; it enables Lover’s Embrace. If your goal is the companion perk, pursue affinity and any applicable progression requirements without assuming that you must accept a romance.

What is not the same for every romance?
The shared idea—affinity followed by conversations—does not make the character paths interchangeable. Approval preferences differ, and personal quests can gate further progress. The cited references establish the eligible roster and identify quest gates affecting Cait, Curie, and Danse, but do not provide a verified, complete step-by-step dialogue order and approval list for every character. Avoid relying on one companion’s approval checklist as a route for another.
