Sciel’s route becomes consequential earlier, around relationship rank 3 to 4 and again after the second Act II Axon. Lune’s route begins after Act II and involves a personal quest in Sirène’s Dress. If you are undecided, avoid accepting either character’s romantic invitation until you choose.
How romance and relationship ranks work
Companion relationship scenes become available at camp from Act II. Speak with companions and accept available “spend time” scenes. Their availability is gated by story progress, so if a character has no new scene, advance the main story and check camp again rather than repeatedly resting.

Each companion has seven relationship ranks. Rank progression can unlock gameplay rewards, including attacks; romance is a separate, narrative-focused choice. The cited route guide ties the final Gradient Attack rewards for Sciel and Lune to rank 7, whether or not you romance them.
How to romance Sciel

If you want Sciel, keep Lune’s route open by declining Lune’s romantic invitation.

After defeating one of the Act II Axons, return to camp and speak with Sciel. As your relationship progresses from rank 3 to rank 4, she invites Verso away from camp. Choose “Do you even need to ask?” to accept.

After defeating the second Axon, return to camp and speak with Sciel again. Choose “I feel used. But I like it.” to commit to her route. At this point, Lune’s route is unavailable for that playthrough.

After defeating the Paintress and entering Act III, speak with Sciel during her rank 6 scene and choose “Let’s celebrate” to complete the route.
How to romance Lune

Keep Lune’s route available by declining Sciel’s earlier romantic overtures. The English-language guide lists these responses: at rank 3, “Um, actually I’m a bit sleepy.”; at rank 4, “That might not be a good idea. I don’t know if I can keep my feelings casual.”

After completing Act II and defeating the Paintress, return to camp and speak with Lune. Her personal quest sends you to the resting place of her parents and Expedition 46.

Travel to Sirène’s Dress. After Lune plays music at a door, defeat Chromatic Glissando. Collect and listen to the Expedition Journal behind it, then leave the area and return to camp to complete the scene and reach rank 6.

After the rank 6 scene, speak with Lune again. If you have not romanced Sciel, Lune asks for help with her song. Choose “Sure. I’d love to help you with ‘your song.’” to complete the romance and reach rank 7.
Which route should you choose?
There is no evidence-based “best” route. Sciel’s decision arrives earlier and has a second consequential scene after the second Axon. Lune’s invitation comes later and includes a quest connected to her parents and Expedition 46. Choose based on which character and story you prefer, how much you want to avoid spoilers, or whether you plan another playthrough.

The official Clair Obscur site describes Lune as the daughter of prominent researchers who has sacrificed everything to complete her parents’ work, with the goal of unraveling the Paintress’s mystery. It describes Sciel as a farmer turned teacher who is warm and outgoing, while her teasing smile masks a painful past.
Dialogue and patch caveats
The dialogue quoted here is from an English-language guide. Exact wording may differ in other localizations. The cited sources do not establish a latest patch version or whether later updates change these scenes. The official patch archive includes fixes affecting relationship-quest behavior, so if a scene does not appear as described, confirm your game is updated and continue the story before concluding that the route is blocked.
