Metacritic currently lists the 2019 remaster at 74/100 from 12 critic reviews, rated “Mixed or Average”: six reviews are positive, six are mixed, and none are negative. Critics admire its freedom, replay value, pixel art, and distinctive identity, but its unclear direction and demanding systems make it a harder sell for players who want a guided adventure.
How do critics rate Romancing SaGa 3?
Metacritic’s displayed aggregate for the 2019 remaster is 74/100, based on 12 critic reviews. The distribution is evenly divided between positive and mixed reviews, with zero negative reviews. That small sample matters: the score is a snapshot of those 12 reviews, not a universal verdict. Metacritic’s review page also reflects the split in its excerpts, which describe a fascinating classic that still shows its age.

The Switch-specific sample is separate. Switch Scores lists eight outlets with an average of 7.73/10 and scores ranging from 6.0 to 9.0:

| Nintendo Life | 6.0 |
Those figures come from a different set of outlets than Metacritic’s 12-review aggregate, so the platform-specific average should not be treated as a direct breakdown of that score. Switch Scores’ listing shows a wide range of reactions even within its smaller Switch sample.

- Every 300 years, Morastrum, the Star of Death, rises, dooming all born beneath it except the mysterious Child of Destiny. Nearly twenty years after its last appearance, an insurrection in Loanne uncovers a far greater threat: the Four Sinistrals seek to reopen the gates to the Abyss. Eight heroes bound by fate must unite to save the world.
- Characters - Choose from eight protagonists, each with a unique story, and recruit over twenty allies to your party
- Graphics - Inspired by the original pixel art and Tomomi Kobayashi's illustrations, the remake features character designs by Yoshiro Ambe and fully realized 3D environments.
- Freeform Scenario System - Your choices shape the adventure, from the stories you pursue to the order in which you challenge the Sinistrals, creating a unique experience every playthrough.
- Battle and Character Power Systems - Classic SaGa features such as Glimmer and Formation return alongside a new timeline-based battle system and United Attacks for deeper tactical combat.
What do critics like about the game?
Eight protagonists and unusual freedom
Players choose one of eight protagonists, and each route brings different parts of the interwoven story into focus. Nintendo Life highlights the resulting replay value: the broader story’s nuances become clearer across multiple characters rather than through one straightforward campaign. That structure gives the game a distinctive identity, though it also asks players to accept that a single run may leave parts of the picture unseen.
Classic pixel art and music
Reviewers praise the crisp, detailed pixel-art presentation, with particular appreciation for the sprites. Eurogamer Italy’s excerpt on Metacritic also commends the classic visuals and soundtrack. The remaster updates the presentation without replacing the game’s old-school visual character.

- The Rise of Morastrum--an event where the dark star blocks out the sun--threatens the very existence of our world. All born in that year are doomed to perish before its end.
- However, during the first Rise of Morastrum 600 years ago, a sole child did survive. He came to be known as the Archfiend, leading the world to ruins.
- Another 300 years passed, and again a child defied fate. She came to be known as the Matriarch, defeating the evil and bringing peace back to the world.
- Now, 300 years later, the Rise of Morastrum strikes again, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Will there be another child of destiny? Will the child be righteous, evil, or another force that the world cannot fathom?
A memorable, unusual JRPG
Metacritic’s collected review excerpts describe Romancing SaGa 3 as one of the more fascinating and unique JRPGs of its era. The range of Switch scores—from several high marks to a lower assessment—fits a game whose unusual systems and loose structure can be a major draw for some players and a barrier for others.
What are the main criticisms?
It can be hard to know what to do next
Nintendo Life reports that scenes do not always make the next objective clear, leaving players to experiment and sometimes guess. Its review recommends a detailed guide for anyone who wants to avoid mistakes that can close off content or make later portions more difficult. Players who enjoy figuring out an opaque game may welcome that uncertainty; those who want clear signposting may find it frustrating.

This HD remaster of the legendary RPG masterpiece introduces optimized graphics, a new dungeon to explore, new scenarios, and a new game+ function.
The systems demand patience
Metacritic’s excerpts from RPG Site and RPGamer warn that newcomers may need time to adjust to the game’s obtuse design, and that research and grinding can be part of the experience. RPG Site’s reproduced assessment puts the caveat plainly: “Although Romancing SaGa 3 is a wonderful game, I hesitate to recommend playing this game without any prior knowledge of the series or knowing what to expect.”
The remaster keeps the older design
The 2019 edition improves the presentation and adds content, but reviewers do not describe it as a modern redesign. Its core structure and friction remain those of a 1995 RPG, which is central to both its appeal and its limitations.

Some expected quality-of-life options are missing
Nintendo Life notes there is no speed-up option, a feature its reviewer would have welcomed for slow text and battles. The remaster adds New Game+ but does not smooth every part of the original pace.

Who should play Romancing SaGa 3?
Based on the critics’ recurring observations, it is best suited to players who like experimenting with unusual RPG mechanics, choosing among flexible character routes, and replaying to see more of a story. SaGa fans and players comfortable consulting a guide may be especially well placed to enjoy what it does differently.
It is a less obvious fit for someone seeking a tightly directed plot, constant clarity about the next objective, or modern convenience features that speed up text and battles. The mixed aggregate is less a sign of a uniformly poor game than a reflection of a design that rewards a particular kind of patience and curiosity.
