The remaster is not friction-free, and some reviewers found the puzzles or final episodes less successful. Newcomers can jump in, though starting with Season 1 gives the series more context.
What is The Devil’s Playhouse?
The Devil’s Playhouse is the third Telltale Sam & Max season, originally released in five monthly episodes in 2010. It was also Telltale’s final season with the characters. The 2024 remaster, developed by Skunkape Games, completes Skunkape’s trilogy of remastered seasons.
Skunkape says four members of the original Sam & Max development team acquired the games’ rights after Telltale closed in 2018 and worked with former colleagues on the remasters. Skunkape says it is not affiliated with Telltale. The original season never launched on Xbox; the remaster brought it to that platform for the first time. In an August 1, 2024 Xbox Wire article, Skunkape principal Dan Connors said the remaster would “close out the trilogy” on August 14.
How does it play?
Psychic toys drive the puzzles
The story begins when Max finds a toy that lets him glimpse the future. The psychic Toys of Power grant abilities including seeing the future, teleporting, and reading minds. You use these powers to explore, solve puzzles, and contend with villains who want the toys for themselves. Their unusual abilities give this point-and-click adventure its clearest gameplay identity.

What the remaster changes
Skunkape describes this as its most ambitious Sam & Max remaster. Its official game page says it added mouse controls alongside the original gamepad controls, revised environments with more detail, restored cut content, and fixed bugs. The Steam listing also highlights improvements to lighting, lip-sync, cinematography, and music.
These are meaningful presentation and control updates, but they do not change the game’s basic point-and-click structure. The result is a more polished way to experience the season rather than a redesign of its puzzles or episode format.

What do reviews say?
Reviews of the remaster praise its retained comedy and technical polish, while also noting rough spots. Adventure Game Hotspot’s August 14, 2024 review said the upgrades make the season “sparkle that much more” while preserving its comedy. Other criticism cited in Metacritic’s review index points to long loading times, some control issues, puzzle friction, and a less effective or confusing narrative stretch in the last two episodes.
Those reactions suggest a season that can be inventive and funny without every puzzle or episode landing equally well. Destructoid’s August 19, 2024 excerpt called Season 3 the best one but advised newcomers to start with Season 1. That is a recommendation, not a requirement: the season’s central premise is understandable on its own, while playing from the beginning offers more context for the characters and series.

Should you play this season first?
- Start with Season 1 if you want the series’ progression and character context. Destructoid’s recommendation to begin there is especially sensible for newcomers.
- Jump straight to The Devil’s Playhouse if its psychic-toy premise is what interests you most. Its puzzles and abilities supply a distinctive hook, and you do not need to play the earlier seasons to understand that premise.
- Choose based on your tolerance for adventure-game friction. The inventive powers are the main draw, but reviews do report puzzle and control frustrations, as well as concerns about the final episodes.
Where can you play it, and what languages are supported?
Skunkape lists the remaster for Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PC, and PlayStation, with storefront links on its official page. Steam gives the PC remaster’s release date as August 14, 2024. Nintendo’s Switch listing identifies its edition as digital and gives the same release date. Store listings and regional availability can change, so check your local store before buying.
Skunkape lists English audio and subtitles in English, German, French, and Russian. Steam distinguishes English full audio from interface and subtitle support for English, French, German, and Russian; Nintendo lists American English, French, German, and Russian. Check the relevant platform listing if a particular language or audio track matters to you.

What about the original release?
The remaster is the current version to consider if you want the revised presentation and added mouse controls. The original releases are a separate option for existing owners: Skunkape’s support article says they will not receive patches or technical support, though copies bought on Steam or GOG should remain in the buyer’s library. The sources do not establish a controlled head-to-head performance comparison, so the choice is mainly between the remaster’s stated updates and keeping an existing original copy.
