To fix RuneScape: Dragonwilds multiplayer lag on PC, first identify whether the problem is delayed online responses or low frame rate: connection troubleshooting will not fix a struggling PC, and lowering graphics settings will not repair a network problem. Work through the checks below in order. They can help isolate common causes, but none guarantees a fix if the issue is with the host, ISP, or game service.
Is it network lag or low FPS?
Watch what happens when you move, attack, or interact. If the image stays smooth but your character, other players, or the world respond late, investigate the connection and multiplayer host. If the image itself stutters or feels slow, investigate PC performance. These are useful clues, not a definitive remote diagnosis: both problems can occur at once.
- Delayed actions or position corrections: start with the connection checks below.
- Choppy visuals or consistently low frame rate: compare your PC with the game requirements and reduce video settings.
- Only one world or host seems affected: compare with another session if possible; a problem limited to one session may involve its host or setup.
Jagex treats connection troubleshooting and graphics performance as separate topics in its connection guidance and performance guidance.
Try the connection checks in order
1. Restart and reduce network activity
- Restart the PC.
- Close applications that may be using the internet, then test the game again.
- Power-cycle the modem and router: unplug them for at least 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for the connection to return before testing.
These are among Jagex’s recommended steps for connection problems. If several people or devices share the connection, reducing other network use can help determine whether congestion is involved.

2. Test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
If you play over Wi-Fi, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and test the same multiplayer session. Jagex recommends trying a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be contributing to connection trouble. Treat this as a reliability test, not a promise of lower ping: it will not correct a distant or overloaded host, an ISP problem, or a game-side issue.
3. Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and ISP conditions
- If you use a VPN or proxy, temporarily turn it off to test whether it is affecting the connection. Restore it afterward if it is required for your privacy or network access.
- Check that your PC firewall and router are not blocking the game or Steam traffic. Jagex specifically advises allowing Steam traffic through the firewall.
- If the problem continues across devices or games, contact your ISP to ask whether there is a service or routing issue.
4. Use Jagex’s Windows network commands only if needed
Jagex also lists these commands as possible troubleshooting steps. They are not required for every lag problem. Open Command Prompt, run each command, and test the game afterward:

ipconfig /flushdnsclears the DNS resolver cache.ipconfig /releasereleases the current IP configuration.ipconfig /renewrequests a renewed IP configuration.
Use the commands as written, including the space after ipconfig. If you are unsure about changing network settings on a managed or work PC, ask its administrator first. See Jagex’s connection troubleshooting steps for its full guidance.
If the game looks choppy, check PC performance
Compare your system with one clearly identified requirements source rather than blending different official listings. Valve’s Steam listing gives these PC specifications:

These values are from the Steam store listing. Jagex’s separate performance page gives somewhat different recommended hardware, including a Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel equivalent and an RTX 2070 8 GB or AMD equivalent. Because the official pages differ, check both current pages when making a purchase or upgrade decision.
If your PC struggles at higher settings, lower video settings and retest. A change that improves smoothness points toward a graphics-performance bottleneck; it does not establish that the network is fixed.

Could the multiplayer host be causing it?
Host setup is another possibility, especially if the delay follows one world or session. Jagex’s dedicated-server guide documents requirements for a self-hosted dedicated server; it does not establish that a dedicated server will lower latency for every group.

These figures come from Jagex’s dedicated-server setup guide, which describes version 0.11 in March 2026. The server’s firewall, router, and ISP must permit the relevant traffic; Jagex notes that some ISPs may prevent port forwarding.

A dedicated server also changes who manages uptime, hardware, network load, and setup. The guide supplies configuration requirements, not a comparative latency benchmark, so switching hosting arrangements is not a guaranteed fix. If you are not the host, ask them to check their PC or server load and network stability while you test from your own connection.
What about a known Dragonwilds latency issue?
Jagex’s official known-issues notice dated April 17, 2025, for update 0.7.1, said: “Some latency may be experienced for Clients, particularly during combat.” It added that the effect could be more noticeable in ranged combat and that clients might experience network corrections if the host was alt-tabbed. This is a historical note for that update, not confirmation of a current issue in October 2026. The available official information does not establish whether a current outage or widespread incident is causing any particular player’s symptoms.
