If Heartopia keeps crashing on your Steam Deck, start by installing SteamOS updates and restarting the device; then close third-party apps and, if needed, try a different Proton compatibility tool. These are Valve’s general troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed Heartopia-specific fix. The exact cause cannot be identified without knowing when the crash happens and what configuration the Deck is using.
Is Heartopia supposed to work on Steam Deck?
Steam currently labels Heartopia Playable on Steam Deck. Valve’s compatibility categories describe Playable games as ones that may need manual adjustments, so the rating is not a promise that every SteamOS or Proton setup will run without crashes.
SteamDB records a successful SteamOS compatibility test on January 21, 2026, for build 21529844. That dated result is a snapshot, not a diagnosis of a crash on a later build. Its notes also say that in-game text may be small, text entry may require manually opening the on-screen keyboard, and single-player play requires an active internet connection. See the SteamDB compatibility record.
Heartopia is free-to-play on Steam and was released there on January 16, 2026, according to its Steam store listing.

How to troubleshoot Heartopia crashes
Try these steps in order. After each one, reopen Heartopia and check whether the same failure still occurs.
-
Update SteamOS and restart
Install any available Steam Deck system updates, then restart the Deck before launching the game again. Valve recommends updates and a restart as initial steps for system instability.

Close third-party apps
If you installed third-party applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily and restart the Deck. Valve lists this among its first steps for application instability. This is a diagnostic check, not evidence that a particular app is causing Heartopia to crash.
-
Check Heartopia’s compatibility settings
In the Steam Library, highlight Heartopia, press the Menu button, and open Properties → Compatibility. If needed, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and try the latest Proton version, as Valve recommends for an unstable Steam app.

Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide gives this path: “Enable Proton for a specific game by highlighting the game in your Library, then pressing the Menu button and selecting > Properties > Compatibility > Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.” The guidance is general; it does not establish that a particular Proton version fixes Heartopia. Steam may download the Windows version of a game when you switch compatibility tools if only the Linux version was installed.
-
Capture the details if it still crashes
Note whether the failure happens at launch, login, loading, or during gameplay, along with the exact error message, SteamOS version, and selected Proton tool. Also note whether other Steam games are affected. These details help distinguish a Heartopia-only problem from a wider app or system instability when searching Steam Deck discussions or contacting Steam Support.

The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What the crash information can—and can’t—tell you
The title alone does not identify whether Heartopia is failing at launch, login, loading, or during play, and it provides no error message or Deck configuration. There is therefore no established cause or guaranteed fix to report. The useful comparison is what changes the outcome: whether the failure affects other games, whether third-party apps are active, and whether selecting another compatibility tool makes a difference. Treat those observations as clues, not proof of a cause.
If the problem persists after the initial troubleshooting steps, Valve recommends contacting Steam Support.
