Before your first trip into the Zone, pick a destination, prepare at a hub, and leave room to move. The most useful beginner habits are to avoid unnecessary fights, keep healing items handy, use bolts and a detector around anomalies, and make manual saves whenever the game allows. One choice deserves extra thought: GSC Game World’s official FAQ says campaign difficulty is selected at the start and cannot be changed during play, though Update 2.0 may affect how options appear in your installed version.
Prepare at a hub before heading out
Start with one quest or map destination rather than setting off without a purpose. The PDA quest log and map markers can help you keep an outing focused. Before leaving, check your supplies and condition at a hub.

- Put unnecessary items in a stash, sell them, or discard them. A heavy backpack makes it harder to run from mutants and leaves less room for loot.
- Carry a sensible amount of first aid, bandages, ammunition, anti-radiation supplies, energy drinks, and food for the hazards you expect.
- Ask a technician to repair weapons and equipment. Damaged weapons can jam.
- Review your installed artifacts and rest before setting out.
Think of preparation as balancing readiness against mobility: bring enough to handle likely trouble, but do not fill every slot with supplies you may not need.
Read the HUD and replenish as you explore
Keep an eye on the HUD for health, stamina, radiation, ammunition, selected weapons, and status effects such as hunger or bleeding. Treat the cause of a problem, not just the health bar.

- Use first aid or food to restore health.
- Use bandages to address bleeding.
- Use anti-radiation supplies or vodka to address radiation.
Keep treatment items in quick-access slots where possible so you can respond without rummaging through your inventory. Look for supplies in caches, on enemy bodies, through trade, and as mission rewards. A dead stalker’s PDA can reveal cache marks, so check bodies for more than ammunition.
Handle anomalies and Emissions carefully
Crossing anomalous areas
Use bolts and a detector to negotiate anomalous fields. Move deliberately and pay attention to your equipment and surroundings rather than rushing through an unfamiliar hazard.
Surviving an Emission
Get to shelter and wait for the event to pass. GSC Game World’s official Beginner’s Guide & FAQs puts it plainly: “The only way to survive an Emission is to wait it out in a shelter.”

Choose whether to fight, sneak, or leave
Combat is optional in many situations, and it can consume ammunition, medical supplies, and equipment durability. Before engaging, assess the area, available cover, enemy positions, and whether the objective requires a fight.

- Use cover and track enemies with the compass.
- Choose a weapon, ammunition, and firing mode suited to the situation. Single shots or short bursts conserve ammunition.
- Keep first-aid kits and bandages accessible, and repair worn gear with a technician when you can.
- If you run out of ammunition, check nearby bodies and weapons, switch weapons, use your knife, or flee.
If you try to avoid detection
Slow movement or crouching makes less sound. Darkness and rain can help you avoid detection by human enemies, and a silencer can reduce shot noise. Mutants also use smell, however, so do not assume the same stealth tactics work the same way against them.
If the situation turns against you
Retreat when you lack ammunition or medical supplies, have poor cover, or face enemies from an unfavorable position. Breaking contact can preserve resources for a more manageable encounter.

GSC’s official FAQ says manual saves are available at most times, except during combat or when the story prevents saving; autosaves occur at key points. If you die, you reload from a save and must repeat progress made since it. Make a manual save in a safe moment before a risky outing or encounter.

The same FAQ says difficulty is chosen when starting a campaign and cannot be changed during play. Choose based on how much challenge and supply scarcity you are willing to accept, rather than assuming you can switch later. Since the FAQ dates to December 5, 2024, check the current in-game options if your installed version presents different choices.
Check what changed in your installed version
GSC announced Update 2.0 on August 20, 2026, alongside the Cost of Hope expansion, describing it as the biggest overhaul to the game’s look, feel, and world since launch. The announcement also describes a customizable survival experience, Master difficulty, and a toggleable Expedition mode for other difficulty levels. GSC’s patch archive lists a September 10, 2026 entry. These updates make version-specific details worth checking: consult the patch notes for your installed build and rely on the options shown in-game where they differ from older guidance.
The open world lets players choose routes and the order of activities. GSC describes A-Life 2.0 as a system intended to make inhabitants move, hunt, fight, and occupy locations independently of the player; treat that as the system’s stated design, not a guarantee about any particular encounter. See GSC’s Update 2.0 announcement and official news and patch archive for the update context.
