Positive reviews describe a blend of survival horror and open-world shooting rather than a straightforward, forgiving action game. Game Rant’s November 20, 2024 review excerpt called the game “truly something special,” praising its open world, choice-driven narrative, and challenging combat while acknowledging blemishes. That is Game Rant’s launch-era judgment, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the difficulty or pacing.

Launch-era technical problems
Reviews published around the original November 20, 2024 release reported bugs, performance problems, and a lack of technical polish. VGC’s launch review described what was presented at launch as “a technical mess” that did not capitalize on the game’s best ideas. That strong assessment belongs to VGC’s November 20, 2024 review of the launch build; it should not be treated as a finding about every later patch or platform.

Some critics also pointed to weaker AI and technical hiccups, saying these could break immersion or detract from the otherwise compelling setting. The critical question for a current player is therefore not simply whether the launch reviews were positive or negative, but which version they covered and what has changed since.

There has been substantial post-launch development. GSC Game World says its free Update 2.0, described as a major overhaul, released on August 20, 2026, alongside the Cost of Hope expansion. The official patch-notes listing includes a 2.0.5 entry dated September 10, 2026. Those updates establish that the game has continued to change; they do not, by themselves, establish that every launch problem was fixed on every platform. Check the current patch notes and platform-specific reports for the version you intend to play.
How should you compare the PC, Xbox, and PS5 reviews?
Do not treat the original PC and Xbox Series review coverage as interchangeable with the later PlayStation review. The original release was November 20, 2024; TechRadar’s PS5 review is dated November 21, 2025, and lists the PS5 release date as November 20, 2025. The PS5 review therefore reflects a later release context after a year of updates, not the launch build reviewed in 2024.

TechRadar reviewer Matt Cabral disclosed that he had previously played the Xbox version and spent nearly 50 hours across main and side missions, activities, and exploration for the PlayStation review. He tested quality and performance modes on PS5 Pro and mostly played in performance mode. TechRadar called the PS5 release polished and discussed PS5- and PS5 Pro-specific improvements and DualSense integration. That is the publication’s assessment of its reviewed release, not a universal assurance that all current builds are bug-free. A target resolution and frame rate describe the intended tier, not a promise that a particular system will sustain it.
