Whether it is worth playing depends largely on how much you enjoy repeated pursuit and demanding fights—and whether its co-op and PvP options appeal to you.
What do reviews say about Salt and Sacrifice?
The reception is mixed rather than a clear consensus. Metacritic lists a 72 Metascore based on 40 critic reviews in its release-era aggregation; the review count can change as coverage is added. Its page showed a user score of 4.7 from 153 ratings on October 8, 2026, a time-sensitive snapshot rather than a permanent rating. Metacritic’s listing should be checked for the current figures.

One useful example of the balance is Game Informer’s review excerpt displayed by Metacritic. It praises stretches of exploration, the hunting and crafting concepts, and the moody atmosphere, while criticizing clunky progression systems and maddening enemy encounters. That is one review’s assessment, not proof that every critic shared the same view. GameSpot’s listing indexes Richard Wakeling’s review, “Salt And Sacrifice Review – Mage Hunter,” with a score of 7. GameSpot’s game listing provides that review reference.
On Steam, 62% of 1,733 user reviews were positive in the listing snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. Steam also displayed 70% positive from 17 recent reviews at that time; that small, changing sample is not a stable trend. Steam’s listing shows the current user-review figures.

What kind of game is Salt and Sacrifice?
It is an action RPG with Souls-like combat and Metroidvania-style exploration. You play a Marked Inquisitor hunting elemental Mages across a large, labyrinthine world. Defeating Mages feeds into crafting weapons and armor from their remains, making the hunt both a combat challenge and a route to new equipment. Steam describes it as an online co-op successor to Salt and Sanctuary; that is publisher/developer storefront copy, not an independent review.
The core loop is a good fit if you like exploring interconnected areas, pursuing powerful targets and turning victories into gear. It may be a poor fit if repeated hunts, difficult encounters or progression systems that feel cumbersome quickly wear down your patience. The review evidence supports both reactions; it does not establish a single experience shared by all players.

How does it compare with Salt and Sanctuary?
Salt and Sacrifice follows the earlier game’s dark-fantasy action-RPG foundation, but its defining emphasis is more explicit Mage pursuit and crafting. The available sources do not support a definitive head-to-head ranking, so the practical comparison is what each player values:
- Combat and pacing: The Mage hunts and their challenging encounters are central to Sacrifice; some review criticism focuses on how frustrating those encounters can become.
- Progression: Crafting equipment from hunted foes is a major part of the loop, though a cited review describes the progression systems as clunky.
- Exploration and mood: Exploration and a moody atmosphere are among the strengths noted in the Game Informer excerpt displayed by Metacritic.
- Multiplayer: Sacrifice lists online co-op and faction-based PvP features, giving players multiplayer options alongside solo play.
Can you play solo, co-op or PvP?
Steam lists single-player, online co-op, online PvP, shared/split-screen PvP, cross-platform multiplayer and Remote Play Together as features. Nintendo’s US Switch page lists single-system play for 1–2 players and online play for 2–6. The number of listed players describes that storefront’s feature information, not a guarantee about the experience in every mode. Nintendo’s official product page has the Switch-specific details.
When did it release, and what platforms is it on?
The initial release was May 10, 2022. The Nintendo Switch and Steam releases arrived later in November 2023; the listed dates differ by platform: Steam gives November 6, 2023, while Nintendo gives November 7, 2023. These are later-release dates, not competing dates for the original launch. GameSpot lists PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5, while Metacritic lists PC, Switch, PS4 and PS5. Confirm availability for the specific platform and region before buying.

It is most likely to appeal to players who want a challenging dark-fantasy action RPG with interconnected exploration, target hunts, gear crafting and multiplayer options. The main caution is that the same pursuit-and-combat structure can feel repetitive or aggravating, and a cited review specifically flags progression friction and maddening encounters. The mixed review picture makes it a better match for players who welcome that challenge than for anyone seeking a consistently smooth progression curve.
