Why did Sarah Bond leave Xbox?
Bond’s memo gives only her own explanation: she felt it was the right time for her next personal and professional step. She also said the technological era ahead energized her and that she saw an opportunity for fresh eyes and new leadership. She did not say whether she was pushed out, passed over, or leaving for another specific reason; claims about those possibilities are not established by the memo. Pure Xbox’s February 22, 2026 report likewise described the next-step statement as the only explanation she gave.

Who took over after Bond?
Microsoft announced Asha Sharma as EVP and CEO of Microsoft Gaming on February 20, 2026. In the same announcement, Microsoft named Matt Booty EVP and Chief Content Officer. Bond said she had worked with Sharma on the handover and would stay on as a Special Advisor to help with the transition. Her praise for Sharma’s experience and commitment is Bond’s assessment, not an independent performance finding.
Microsoft’s announcement later recorded a change in organizational naming: as of April 23, 2026, Microsoft Gaming was known as XBOX and Sharma’s title was CEO XBOX. The title therefore depends on the date being described: she was announced as EVP and CEO of Microsoft Gaming on February 20, and the later update identifies her as CEO XBOX. Microsoft’s official announcement includes the appointment and the subsequent editor’s note.

What Bond said about Xbox’s direction
Bond described the team’s work as spanning PC and cloud gaming, a next console in development, and a more open platform reaching players worldwide. Those are her characterizations of Xbox’s work and direction in the memo, not independently measured findings or a detailed specification of the next console. She also placed her tenure in the context of Microsoft’s 2022 announcement of its intention to acquire Activision Blizzard, saying she had committed to helping lead Xbox through the resulting period of change.
