In a BBC interview reported by Nintendo Life on December 21, 2024, Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi said subscription services were “very interesting” and that Sega was “evaluating some opportunities.” He also said the company was discussing something it could not disclose. That points to exploration, not a confirmed launch.
What Sega actually said
Nintendo Life reported Utsumi’s comments from a BBC interview on December 21, 2024. He described subscription services as “very interesting,” said Sega was “evaluating some opportunities,” and added: “We’re thinking something – and discussing something – we cannot disclose right now.” Read Nintendo Life’s report.
The remarks establish that Sega was considering or discussing an opportunity at that time. They do not establish that Sega approved a service, committed to building one, or planned to launch it.
What “Netflix-like” does—and does not—mean
Here, “Netflix-like” is shorthand for accessing games through a subscription. It does not confirm game streaming, cloud-only play, a Netflix partnership for games, or any particular subscription model. TechRadar’s suggestion that Sega’s retro catalog could make a natural service offering is its own speculation, not a confirmed Sega plan. TechRadar’s coverage also frames Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, EA Play, and Ubisoft Plus as possible points of comparison; Sega did not identify all of them as direct rivals.

What has—and has not—been announced
The cited reports provide no service name, price, launch date, territory, supported device, catalog, or business model. They also do not say whether games would be downloadable, streamed, or available both ways; whether new releases would arrive on day one; or what would happen to access when a game leaves a catalog.
Sega Sammy’s May 13, 2021 corporate presentation discussed subscription and cloud services as industry and monetization directions, and described using past intellectual property through remasters, with remakes or reboots as possible next steps if reception was positive. That is historical strategic context, not an announcement of this service. See Sega Sammy’s corporate presentation materials.

Two later Sega announcements are also distinct from a game subscription. On April 24, 2026, Sega announced SEGA UNIVERSE, a transmedia initiative for legacy intellectual property; the announcement does not describe a subscription for games. Sega’s SEGA UNIVERSE announcement. On September 15, 2026, Sega announced a Crazy Taxi film adaptation and other screen adaptations with Netflix. That is a screen-content collaboration, not confirmation that Netflix will distribute Sega games or that Sega is launching a game pass. Sega’s Netflix adaptation announcement.
