There is no single confirmed fix for every Red Dead Redemption 2 crash on Steam Deck. Start by updating SteamOS and restarting, then close third-party Desktop Mode apps. If you own the Steam version, test the latest Proton release through the game’s Compatibility settings. Steam rates the game Playable, not Verified, so some manual configuration may be needed.
Why can RDR2 crash on Steam Deck?
Steam’s compatibility label for Red Dead Redemption 2 is Playable. Valve defines that rating for games that work on Deck but may require manual configuration; it is not a promise that every setup will run without problems. The Steam listing also notes partial controller support and a required Rockstar Games account.
The available official guidance does not identify one cause or universal remedy for current Deck crashes. The crash point, error message, SteamOS version, Proton selection, and where you bought the game all matter to diagnosis.
Try these Steam Deck troubleshooting steps in order

Install updates and restart
Install any available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck and try the game again. Steam lists updating and restarting among its first steps for instability. See Steam’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide.

Close third-party Desktop Mode apps
Exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and retry RDR2. This helps check whether another app is contributing to instability.

Test the latest Proton version for the Steam copy
For the Steam version, open the game’s Properties, select Compatibility, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose the latest Proton version available. Steam’s guidance is: “Try choosing the latest version of Proton.” Record the original setting first so you can restore it if the change makes things worse.
Changing Proton is a test, not a guaranteed RDR2 fix. If you compare builds, keep the same save and session where possible, and note whether the game launches, how long it runs, what action precedes a crash, and whether the launcher behaves differently.

Document the failure before escalating
If the crash continues, write down whether it happens at launch, in the Rockstar launcher, during gameplay, or after a repeatable interval. Capture the exact error text and note your SteamOS version, selected Proton build, and whether your copy is from Steam or another launcher. These details make a support request more useful; without them, a specific fix cannot be identified from the general guidance.

For help, contact Steam Support or consult Rockstar’s RDR2 PC troubleshooting page, keeping in mind that Rockstar’s instructions are for PC and may not apply to SteamOS.
Why Windows graphics fixes may not apply
Rockstar’s instructions for the ERR_GFX_STATE error recommend updating graphics drivers and switching from Vulkan to DirectX 12. That article is explicitly for Windows PC. Its fullscreen-optimization directions also do not translate directly to SteamOS, so treat those steps as Windows guidance—not as a verified Steam Deck fix. What Valve’s older RDR2 crash fix tells you
On October 4, 2022, Valve’s Steam Deck Preview-channel update listed “Fixed a crash in Red Dead Redemption 2.” That is a historical note about a fix in that Preview update. It does not establish that the same bug explains a crash today or that installing a current update will resolve every case. Read the October 4, 2022 Preview update note.
