The Outlast Trials Multiplayer Lag on PC: How to Diagnose It

Rubber-banding and choppy frames have different likely causes. Use these checks to distinguish network delay from performance trouble in The Outlast Trials on PC.

If The Outlast Trials is lagging in multiplayer on PC, first identify whether you are seeing network delay or choppy frame delivery. Rubber-banding, teleporting, delayed interactions, and disconnections point to a connection symptom; low or uneven frame rates point to a performance symptom. The distinction matters: changing graphics settings may help frame rate, but it is not an established fix for network delay.

Identify what kind of lag you have

Note what happens, when it happens, and whether it affects just you or the whole party. These symptoms are clues, not proof of a particular cause.

What you notice What to check first
Rubber-banding, teleporting, delayed actions, or disconnects Connection symptoms: compare your experience with another player and check whether other online games are affected.
Low or choppy frames, including when other players appear to move normally Frame-rate symptoms: look at game performance rather than assuming the network is responsible. Steam notes that reduced FPS can have many causes and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee strong performance (Steam performance guidance).

For comparison, Steam’s technical listing gives The Outlast Trials a broadband internet requirement, but does not state a minimum speed, ping, or packet-loss target. Its listed minimums include 8 GB of RAM and 40 GB of disk space; those are system requirements, not multiplayer-lag measurements (Steam technical issues and system requirements).

Troubleshoot multiplayer connection symptoms

Use these low-risk checks to narrow down where the problem may be. They are diagnostic steps, not developer-confirmed universal fixes.

  • Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.

  • 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
  1. Record the symptom and timing. Note whether it is a brief lag spike, persistent rubber-banding, delayed interaction, or a disconnection, and whether it happens throughout a session or at particular times.
  2. Compare players and games. Ask whether another person in your party is experiencing the same issue. If possible, compare with another online game. A problem limited to your connection differs from one shared by the party or seen across multiple games.
  3. Pause other network activity. Temporarily stop large downloads and streams on your local network, then see whether the symptom changes.
  4. If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. Try a wired connection before buying hardware, if one is available. This is a way to compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection—not a guaranteed remedy for a problem involving the game or the route between your ISP and the game.
  5. Restart the game and network equipment if other local symptoms are present. If other devices or online games are also having connection trouble, restart the game and your router or modem, then compare again.
  6. Keep a useful record. Write down your platform, region, ISP, connection type, approximate time, party members’ regions, and any ping or packet-loss information the game displays. Also note whether solo play or other games behave differently.
  7. Escalate a repeatable game-specific problem. If the issue persists in The Outlast Trials but not elsewhere, send Red Barrels a report through its official support route.

Check official support updates and report the issue

Red Barrels’ support archive lists patch entries dated September 8, September 11, and September 17, 2026. The archive directs players with in-game issues to the 18+ official Outlast Discord, where they can contact a support agent through the ticketing system. The archive does not establish that a broad PC multiplayer-lag incident is currently underway or publish a universal lag fix.

When reporting the issue, include your reproducible symptoms and the connection details you recorded. Red Barrels has described co-op as an ongoing focus: in an August 23, 2023 developer update, Game Director Alex said, “Coop play is vital to The Outlast Trials, and we are constantly monitoring how players group up together and will continue to make improvements if needed” (developer update on Steam). That statement provides context about multiplayer development; it is not confirmation of a current lag problem.
