Check for a service incident, update the game and console, test the PS5 connection, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and online play with offline play. These checks help narrow down where the problem may be; none guarantees a fix.
First, check whether the problem is with a service
Before changing your home setup, check the PlayStation Network status page and current MLB The Show service notices. Status can change, so a past report—or a page checked at another time—does not establish whether services are up right now.
If there is no reported incident, continue with the checks below. A working PS5 internet test does not by itself rule out a problem with a particular online match or game service.
Update MLB The Show 25 and PS5 system software
- Check the game: Highlight MLB The Show 25 on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, choose Check for Update, and install an update if one is available. See Sony’s instructions for checking game updates.
- Check the console: Open Settings > System > System Software and check for an available system software update.
An update is worth checking, but it should not be assumed to resolve every kind of lag. For historical context, MLB The Show 25 Game Update 4 was dated March 24, 2025, for PS5 version 1.04, with release scheduled for March 25 at 3 AM PT. Its notes said: “Fixed an issue with Mound Visits: Resolved a few freezes that could occur in online head-to-head and co-op.” That note describes a specific freeze fix, not a general multiplayer-lag fix.

Test the PS5 internet connection
On the console, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Note the result, including the reported speeds, and whether the test completes successfully.
Treat the displayed speed as a snapshot, not proof that the connection to a particular match is healthy. The available official guidance does not specify a minimum speed or latency threshold for MLB The Show 25, so there is no supported number to target as a guaranteed solution.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If practical, connect the PS5 directly to your router with Ethernet and try again under similar conditions. Sony includes trying a wired connection among its troubleshooting checks; this is a comparison, not a promised cure. If the problem changes on Ethernet, that is useful diagnostic information, but it does not by itself establish the root cause.
A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option for this test. You do not need to buy one just because a match lags: use a cable you already have if available, or skip the comparison if wiring the console is impractical.

Work out when the lag happens
Compare the symptom in a consistent way. These checks help describe the pattern without proving which component is at fault:
- Online versus offline: Does the game feel slow only in online play, or in offline modes as well?
- One mode versus several: Is the issue limited to one mode, or does it occur across different online modes?
- One session versus repeated sessions: Does it happen intermittently, or recur at different times?
- This game versus other online games: Are other games affected on the same PS5 and connection?
MLB The Show 25’s Diamond Dynasty modes require an internet connection. On PlayStation, Co-Op, Ranked, Events, Weekend Classic, and Battle Royale require PlayStation Plus. Those are access requirements, not stated bandwidth or latency targets. Weekend Classic is a competitive Diamond Dynasty multiplayer mode.

Know what not to conclude
Delayed responses during an online match are not automatically the same as frame-rate drops or a freeze. The Game Update 4 note covers a few freezes during mound visits in online head-to-head and co-op; it does not diagnose general lag.
Players have discussed lag and connection issues, but individual forum or social posts cannot establish how widespread a problem is, identify a common cause, or prove a remedy. The evidence available does not support treating DNS changes, router port forwarding, a factory reset, a faster internet plan, or replacing the PS5 as established fixes for this game.

What to include when you ask for help
If the issue persists, record details before contacting PlayStation or game support. A precise report makes it easier to distinguish a recurring pattern from a one-off session:
- The mode and approximate time the problem occurred.
- Whether other online games or offline modes showed similar symptoms.
- Whether the PS5 was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- The PS5 internet test result.
- The exact error message, if one appeared.
Include whether the issue recurs across sessions, and check the relevant service-status pages again when it happens.
