What Matt Karch said about Lars Wingefors
Insider Gaming’s April 5, 2024 article summarized a recent GamesIndustry interview with Karch, Saber Interactive’s founder, and quoted him praising Wingefors’s conduct during studio terminations.
“In my mind, nobody has been guided by more of a sense of fairness and reasonableness than Lars. The process that we’ve had to go through to terminate studios has absolutely been… it’s killed us … I would say Embracer tried harder than anybody to save as many jobs as it could.”
The quotation presents Karch’s view of the process and Embracer’s effort to retain jobs. It does not establish that assessment as an independently verified account. The full GamesIndustry interview was linked by Insider Gaming, but the accessible report is the basis for these quotations.

Why Karch said the CEO “gets a bad rap”
Karch also pointed to the sale of Gearbox, saying employees stayed with the company until after the announcement because Wingefors wanted to keep them. Insider Gaming quoted him as saying: “Gearbox just sold, right? The employees that were within that company remained in that company until after the announcement, right? Because Lars didn’t want to let anybody go, he really wanted to keep everybody. So I think he gets a bad rap.”
That was Karch’s explanation for why he thought Wingefors was judged unfairly. It should not be read as proof of Wingefors’s intentions or as evidence of broader industry consensus; the report attributes the opinion to Karch.

How Karch connected the defense to Embracer’s restructuring
According to Insider Gaming, Karch linked Embracer’s predicament to the collapse of a proposed deal with Savvy Games Group. He said the failed agreement constrained business development and pushed Embracer into a corner. That is Karch’s reported account of the connection, not an independently established causal finding.
The same 2024 article described Embracer as restructuring after a failed deal it valued at $2 billion and reported that more than 1,400 employees had been laid off. These are figures reported by Insider Gaming at the time; the article’s numbers are not presented here as independently verified company disclosures or as current totals.

Why Saber’s sale-back is relevant context
Insider Gaming reported that Karch had recently bought Saber Interactive back from Embracer for $247 million. This is a historical detail from the April 2024 article, not a current valuation or confirmation of Saber’s present ownership. It helps explain why Karch was discussing Embracer’s decisions from the perspective of a founder whose company had been part of the group, but it does not by itself verify his claims about the restructuring.
