Its combat and pacing are restrained rather than varied or brisk, so the experience works best for players who want an atmospheric, story-led journey—not a sprawling action game. This review covers the Enhanced edition, released in 2025 for PS5 and as an update for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
What kind of game is Hellblade II?
Hellblade II continues the story of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Ninja Theory describes it as a survival story set amid the myth and tyranny of Viking Iceland, following Senua as she tries to save people affected by that tyranny. Its structure is focused and directed: perception puzzles, traversal, and visceral combat take precedence over open-world exploration. The studio said the story would be similar in length to the first game, but has not established an exact official playtime.
The setting is central to the experience. Ninja Theory says its environments draw on real Icelandic locations recreated using satellite data and photogrammetry, while character performances use real-world references and performance capture. Actor Melina Juergens has described travel to Iceland and location scanning as part of production. These are the studio’s accounts of how the game was made.
Does the story and presentation make the focused design worthwhile?
A close perspective on Senua
The game presents events through Senua’s perception, including things she sees and hears that other characters do not. Ninja Theory calls this an “unshared reality” and says it worked with neuroscience and lived-experience collaborators on her portrayal. That is the developer’s account of its creative approach, not a clinical assessment or a claim that one fictional character represents everyone who experiences psychosis.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The close point of view supports the game’s intimate, tightly directed storytelling. It also makes the journey less about choosing your own route and more about inhabiting Senua’s experience as the story unfolds. Players looking for open-ended exploration or a large cast of freely developed systems may find that narrow focus limiting; those who value atmosphere and narrative direction are more likely to find it purposeful.
Audiovisual craft as part of the design
The Icelandic landscapes, character performances, sound and image are not merely decoration around the action: they are a major part of how the game creates immersion. Studio Head Dom Matthews urged players at launch to “turn down the lights” and use headphones for the journey. Headphones are an optional way to engage with the sound design, not a requirement.

How do the combat and pacing hold up?
Combat is brutal in presentation, but its variety is limited compared with action games built around deep move sets or frequent mechanical change. The quiet stretches and deliberate pacing likewise ask for patience. Those qualities can reinforce the story’s tension and atmosphere, but they can also make the experience feel sparse if you want constant encounters, complex combat systems or a quick-moving plot.
That trade-off is reflected in an independent TechRadar review of the Enhanced edition, published August 13, 2025: its reviewer praised the PS5 and PS5 Pro audiovisual presentation and technical improvements, while noting simple combat and quiet pacing. The reviewer described replaying the story, collecting items and comparing graphics modes for roughly ten hours; that is one reviewer’s account and method, not an official playtime or a universal estimate.

What does the Enhanced edition add?
The Enhanced edition launched August 12, 2025, on PS5 and as an update for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. Xbox Wire announced these additions:
- Performance mode: targets 60 FPS, except on Xbox Series S.
- Very High graphics preset: added for Windows PC.
- Dark Rot challenge: an optional challenge mode.
- Expanded Photo Mode: including a Motion tab.
- Developer commentary: more than four hours of commentary announced for the edition.
- Steam Deck verification: announced alongside the update.
These features make the Enhanced edition more than a label change for someone returning to the game. Performance and graphics options may matter most to players choosing how to replay it; the challenge, photo tools and commentary offer other reasons to revisit. The mode available and the resulting performance depend on platform, so a result reported for PS5 Pro should not be assumed to describe every console or PC configuration.

Should you play the first Hellblade before this one?
Hellblade II is a direct sequel, so knowing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice gives you context for Senua and her journey. The developer has not specified how much prior-story knowledge is necessary for a newcomer to follow the sequel. If you want the fullest narrative continuity, play the first game; if you are mainly drawn to the setting and presentation, be aware that the sequel does not stand apart from Senua’s earlier story.
Accessibility and content notes
The PlayStation product listing identifies 26 accessibility features on that platform, including clearer text, color alternatives, audio-cue alternatives, volume controls, mono and 3D audio, basic screen-reader support, subtitles and captions. The listing cautions that its screen reader assists with startup and settings but may not communicate additional gameplay text or visual information. Feature counts and settings are platform-listing-specific; do not assume every platform has the same options.
The PlayStation listing flags extreme violence and strong language. Steam’s developer-provided content notice adds realistic, violent combat, extreme gore in some narrative scenes and partial nudity in some sequences.
Verdict: who should play Hellblade II?
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is best suited to players who want a concise-feeling, highly directed journey where landscape, sound, performance and perspective carry as much weight as combat. Its limited encounter variety and measured pacing are genuine trade-offs, not problems that the Enhanced edition removes. The 2025 edition adds meaningful replay options and is the version to consider on supported platforms, while the core appeal remains the same: an atmospheric story told with striking audiovisual focus.
