Sayonara Wild Hearts is a music-led arcade action game whose greatest strength is how completely its custom pop soundtrack and surreal visuals shape the experience. Its short, song-length stages jump between motorcycle riding, skateboarding, shooting, dance battles, and score chasing. It is a compelling fit for players who want a vivid, tightly paced ride and are happy to replay levels for better ranks; its brevity and relatively simple arcade loop may disappoint anyone looking for a long or mechanically deep adventure.
What kind of game is Sayonara Wild Hearts?
Developed by Simogo and published by Annapurna Interactive, Sayonara Wild Hearts is an arcade action game arranged like a fast-moving pop album. Its surreal story follows a broken heart and the masked rider known as The Fool, with gameplay shifting from one stylized sequence to another rather than settling into a single combat or racing system.
PlayStation’s official description captures the variety: “a dreamy arcade game about riding motorcycles, skateboarding, dance battling, shooting lasers, wielding swords, and breaking hearts at 200 mph.” The pitch is less about mastering one complex mechanic than responding to quick changes in movement, timing, and obstacles as each stage unfolds.
Does the soundtrack and visual style carry the experience?
The custom-written pop soundtrack is central to the game’s identity, not just accompaniment. Nintendo’s listing highlights the original music, while Meristation’s 2019 review credits compositions to Daniel Olsén and Jonathan Eng and mentions vocals by Linnea Olsson. The vivid, dreamlike presentation and music give the short stages a shared momentum, helping their abrupt shifts in activity feel like parts of one audiovisual journey.

That coherence is also the key to whether the game works for you: if you enjoy being swept along by a tightly synchronized mix of music, color, and arcade action, the presentation is a major reason to play. If you need elaborate systems, long-form progression, or a story told through extended scenes, the sensory appeal may not make up for the lean structure.
How do the stages, scoring, and replaying work?
Stages are short and built around a sequence of quick action ideas. You ride, dodge, collect or hit targets, and react as the game changes modes. The practical loop is straightforward: play a stage, receive a performance result, then return to chase a higher score or rank. The variety keeps the pace lively, but the game is not structured as a deep progression of increasingly complex mechanics.
Meristation’s 2019 review estimated roughly two hours for a first completion. That is one reviewer’s estimate, not an official duration; time spent improving scores and ranks can add considerably to a player’s run. The short initial journey can feel deliberate given the song-based format, though it is a real limitation if you expect a lengthy campaign.
Is Sayonara Wild Hearts worth playing?
It is worth considering if you want a concentrated, stylish arcade experience with a distinctive soundtrack and enough score-chasing incentive to revisit levels. It is a less obvious choice if value for you means a long campaign, extensive mechanical depth, or substantial narrative development. The main trade-off is clear: unusually strong audiovisual identity and pace in exchange for a short first run and a focused replay loop.

Critical reception is not reducible to one universal verdict. GameSpot lists Kallie Plagge’s review at 6, while Metacritic presents platform-specific aggregates and critic counts that can differ by platform and change over time. Treat those as outlet and platform snapshots rather than a definitive consensus; the qualities that matter most here are the presentation, the compact stage design, and your appetite for replaying scores.

The official listings reviewed cover Nintendo Switch, Steam/PC, and PlayStation 4/5. Steam lists Simogo as developer, Annapurna Interactive as publisher, and December 12, 2019 as its release date; GameSpot separately lists September 19, 2019 as the game’s first release. These dates refer to different milestones, not conflicting launch information. Check your regional storefront for current availability and edition details.
Controls and platform choice
Choose the platform and control setup that feels comfortable for quick reactions. Meristation’s 2019 review discussed touch controls versus a physical controller and found a controller relevant to handling some sequences on the platform it reviewed. That is a review-specific observation, not a guarantee that touch controls or a controller will feel the same across every version.

The ESRB entry identifies fantasy violence and categorizes the game as rhythm/adventure. This describes that rating entry and region; consult the rating shown for your local edition if regional content guidance matters.
