Sea of Thieves is a shared-world pirate adventure built around choosing an activity, sailing to it, reacting to other crews and world events, then deciding when to sell your loot. Its progression is split across Trading Company reputation, seasonal Renown and Guild Reputation; these tracks reward different kinds of play. Players who want a private session can choose Safer Seas, with some features and progression limited.
What you do in Sea of Thieves
Rare describes Adventure as the game’s shared-world experience: crews roam, explore, fight, loot and take on stories and encounters. You can select Voyages or pursue opportunities you come across while sailing. Objectives and treasure lead to a recurring choice: when and where to turn in what you have collected. Cashing in makes loot count toward rewards and progression.

In practice, the loop is straightforward: pick an activity or destination, sail and respond to what unfolds, complete objectives or gather treasure, then sell it. Other crews may intervene in Adventure, so carrying loot creates both an opportunity and a risk. Rare’s Adventure overview describes the mode as a shared pirate world for discovering, fighting and looting.
How the progression tracks differ
There is not one all-purpose level that represents everything you do. Company reputation, seasonal Renown and Guild Reputation advance through different activities and serve different purposes.

Trading Company reputation and Pirate Legend
Trading Companies have separate reputations, so you can work on more than one. Voyages and selling loot build your standing; promotions can unlock additional Voyage options, while Company progression and commendations provide rewards including cosmetics. Rare’s Become a Legend page sets the Pirate Legend milestone at rank 50 in any three Trading Companies.
Pirate Legend is a recognizable milestone, not the end of Company advancement. Rare’s Season 11 overview documented an extension of most Companies to level 100, followed by Distinctions that let players reset rank and continue progressing. That page also described the Quest Table as a central place to select Voyages and said Voyage completion could grant some reputation immediately, while selling loot remained important for maximum earnings. These are details of the Season 11 update, not a guarantee that every mechanic is unchanged today. See Rare’s Season 11 overview for that dated system description.

Emissary sailing adds risk and Company rewards
Representing a Trading Company as an Emissary is an optional higher-risk, higher-reward approach. Rare describes Emissary sailing as a way to pursue bonuses and compete on ledgers. Because Adventure is shared with other crews, the prospect of carrying valuable loot can make those rewards more consequential: other players can affect your run before you cash in.
Seasonal Renown and optional paid rewards
Renown is separate from Company reputation. Playing and completing season-themed activities advances it, unlocking rewards such as cosmetics, currency and titles. Seasonal formats change, so an old season’s level count, rewards or pass price should not be treated as current. For example, Rare’s release-notes page described Season 21 as having 50 Renown levels and an optional Premium Tier; that is a historical example, not a claim about the season active on October 8, 2026. The official release notes are the place to check season-specific details.

- Sea of Thieves offers the essential pirate experience, from sailing and fighting to exploring and looting – everything you need to live the pirate life and become a legend in your own right.
- Whether you’re voyaging as a group or sailing solo, you’re bound to encounter other crews in this shared-world adventure – but will they be friends or foes, and how will you respond?
A paid pass is not the same thing as access to gameplay. In its explanation of the Season One Plunder Pass, Rare said players could progress through that season’s rewards without buying the pass. The same article listed a price of 999 Ancient Coins for that Season One pass in 2021; that figure is historical and should not be read as a current price. Rare’s explanation is available at Plunder Pass explained.
Guild Reputation is a separate group track
Guild progression rewards activity for the group. Rare employee Shelley Preston’s Guild Progression FAQ says Guild Reputation is earned when treasure is cashed in or Allegiance is earned. An Emissary can still provide bonus Company Gold and Company reputation, but it does not provide bonus Guild Reputation. This distinction matters when choosing whether a session is aimed at advancing a Company or contributing to the Guild.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Adventure or Safer Seas?
Choose based on whether you want the full shared-world experience or a private session. Adventure allows other crews to be part of the encounter; Safer Seas is private play without other crews. Rare presents Safer Seas as an option for learning the game, following Tall Tales without interruption or exploring with a hand-picked crew. In return for lower jeopardy, some features are unavailable and progression is limited.
| Consideration | Adventure | Safer Seas |
|---|---|---|
| Other player crews | Present in the shared world and may intervene | Private session without other crews |
| Useful for | Full shared-world play, including encounters with other crews | Learning, uninterrupted Tall Tales or private exploration |
| Features and progression | Fuller access to the game’s shared-world systems | Some features unavailable; progression limited |
Rare’s Season Ten overview introduced Safer Seas and its tradeoffs. It is a useful starting point for understanding the mode, though the page describes the Season Ten update rather than serving as a current feature-by-feature list.
