Minotti points to the recreated Mêlée Island, puzzle-led play, familiar characters and voices, and the way those elements work within the game’s 3D setting. That is his critical judgment, not a consensus finding.
What the crossover is—and what the review covers
The Legend of Monkey Island is a collaboration between Rare and Lucasfilm Games, told across three Tall Tales. Rare describes it as an original story that pays tribute to the adventure series, while an Xbox Wire interview with Sea of Thieves creative director Mike Chapman said the Tall Tales would be free for Sea of Thieves players when announced in June 2023. Rare’s announcement and the Xbox Wire interview establish that original structure and access offer; they do not establish present availability across every platform or current retailer stock.

GamesBeat writer Mike Minotti’s review, published August 3, 2023 and updated June 18, 2025, concentrates on the first installment and its trip to Mêlée Island. He describes how that setting—the first location in The Secret of Monkey Island—is recreated in 3D, and how arriving by ship through fog as the Monkey Island theme plays makes the crossover feel immediately familiar. Read Minotti’s GamesBeat review.
Why Minotti says the two series fit
A recognizable Monkey Island setting
For Minotti, the recreation of Mêlée Island does more than supply a backdrop. He calls it visually striking and notes its resemblance to the original game’s depiction. The ship’s approach through fog, accompanied by the series’ theme, connects the new 3D environment to Monkey Island’s adventure-game identity.

Puzzles replace some of the usual pirate routine
The Tall Tale shifts emphasis away from Sea of Thieves’ familiar cycle of sailing and treasure hunting toward puzzle-solving. Minotti gives the example of a dog with a bone that players must obtain by solving a puzzle. That change in activity is central to the crossover’s appeal: its Monkey Island-style problem-solving sits inside Sea of Thieves rather than simply reproducing the base game’s usual loop.
Co-op supports searching together—or splitting up
Minotti reports playing cooperatively. He says a crew can remain together or divide up to look for puzzle items and currency, giving players room to tackle the adventure as a group or cover ground separately. This is his account of the play experience, not a claim that the Tall Tale requires a crew.

Characters and voices reinforce the connection
The review highlights the return of recognizable characters and voices, including Dominic Armato as Guybrush Threepwood. Those familiar performances help Minotti see the crossover as more than a themed Sea of Thieves mission: he writes, “Again, this feels just like a new Monkey Island game, and it’s incredible to see it work within the Sea of Thieves framework.”

The phrase describes Minotti’s subjective verdict. His case is that the crossover preserves Monkey Island’s recognizable place, humor-inflected adventure sensibility, characters, voices, and puzzle-solving while adapting them to Sea of Thieves’ 3D shared-world framework and cooperative play. The review is a qualitative assessment, not a controlled comparison or evidence of universal player opinion.
