Sea of Thieves launched on PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2024. PS5 players can sail with friends on other supported platforms, but they need a Microsoft account, and online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus.
When did Sea of Thieves come to PS5?
Sea of Thieves released on PS5 on April 30, 2024. Rare announced the date on February 21, 2024, calling it the first time a Rare game had launched on a PlayStation platform. The PS5 release is an established part of the game’s availability, not a new launch. Rare’s announcement introduced the port and its cross-play plans.

What do you need to play on PS5?
A Microsoft account
PS5 players must sign in with a Microsoft account. Linking it to a PlayStation account allows an existing pirate and eligible progress to carry across linked platforms. Rare’s PS5 FAQ explains the account and progression requirements.
PlayStation Plus for multiplayer
PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer. Without an active subscription, you can still play solo in Safer Seas, but you cannot invite other players or join their sessions. Safer Seas is not offline play: the game still connects to cloud-hosted servers.

Safer Seas includes most of the game and Tall Tales, but excludes some content, including PvP-focused activities, some Trading Company content, and specified world events. Check Rare’s FAQ for its description of the mode and exclusions.
How cross-play and invitations work
Cross-play lets PS5 players sail with friends on other supported platforms. You can deactivate cross-play to restrict matchmaking to PlayStation players. Rare also describes a controller-user matchmaking option, which includes controller players on Xbox. The in-game friends list can show Xbox friends alongside PSN friends for invitations.

Does progress transfer from Xbox or PC?
When you link your PlayStation and Microsoft accounts, Rare says an active pirate character, progress, commendations, eligible cosmetics, and accumulated Gold, Doubloons, and Ancient Coins can synchronize across linked platforms. Not every cosmetic is shared: some items are usable only on PS5, while others are restricted to Xbox, Windows, Steam, or Battle.net versions. Which PS5 edition should you buy?
The game is sold digitally through PlayStation Store. Rare describes Base, Deluxe, and Premium editions; the base edition includes the game and digital bonuses, while Deluxe and Premium add cosmetic bundles and in-game currency. The official store listing also describes digital bonuses such as a 2026 soundtrack, audiobook, and eBook. Contents and offers can vary by region and change, so check the local store page before buying rather than relying on a price or bundle description from another region.

Is the PS5 version worth choosing?
The main practical difference is where you play, not a separate progression track: account linking supports carrying eligible progress across platforms, and cross-play allows mixed-platform crews. Before choosing, check whether your friends use PlayStation or other supported platforms, whether you need PS Plus for multiplayer, and whether you want to link an existing Microsoft account. For a PS5-only session, the option to deactivate cross-play can limit matchmaking to PlayStation players.
