SeaBlock replaces ordinary ore-patch mining with a resource-processing challenge that begins on a small island. For the intended full experience, install Sea Block Pack – Official rather than the core Sea Block mod alone—but check its compatibility with your Factorio version before starting a long save. The official listing reviewed here reports compatibility only through Factorio 1.1, while Factorio’s download page listed stable version 2.0.77 on October 8, 2026.
What changes in SeaBlock?
SeaBlock starts you on a small island with no ordinary ore patches. Instead of mining iron or copper from nearby deposits, you expand usable land and build processing chains that turn available materials into the resources needed for research and production. The official mod page sums up the premise as “No ore patches, expand from a small island.” Read the Sea Block Mod Portal page.

This is more than a new map: the intended setup combines SeaBlock with a broad set of Bob’s and Angel’s mods, adding recipes, buildings, and interdependent production systems. The mod author says SeaBlock is intended to be played with the full set of those mods. Installing only the core mod or a minimal selection may give you an incomplete, untested, or unbalanced version of the experience.
Which SeaBlock setup should you install?

The official FAQ points players to the recommended set through the pack and its dependencies in Factorio’s in-game mod browser. The community installation guide likewise recommends enabling the pack before starting a Freeplay game. If you want the standard SeaBlock experience, choose Sea Block Pack – Official and let the mod manager resolve its dependencies.

Check Factorio compatibility before you start
Version support is the most important qualification for a new SeaBlock run. The official Sea Block listing reviewed reports mod version 0.5.16 and Factorio compatibility from 0.14 through 1.1. Factorio’s download page listed stable version 2.0.77 on October 8, 2026. Those listings do not establish that the official complete SeaBlock pack is ready for Factorio 2.0. A Mod Portal discussion describes work on a 2.0 port and later unofficial ways to experiment, but it does not confirm a finished official 2.0 pack.
Before committing to a long save, check the compatibility information shown for the pack and its dependencies in the Mod Portal or in the game’s mod browser. Do not assume that steps written for Factorio 1.1 are validated for 2.0. The official listing’s compatibility range can change, so use the current listing rather than relying on the version numbers above as permanent guidance. What to do first in a SeaBlock game
The community Getting Started guide lays out four opening objectives in this order. Its author warns that the page may be out of date, so treat the goals as orientation and confirm exact recipes and machine requirements in the recipe browser for your installed mod version. Open the community Getting Started guide.
- Crush stiratite. This is the guide’s first objective in the opening progression.
- Farm brown algae. Follow the installed pack’s current recipe and building requirements rather than assuming older instructions still match.
- Craft a Basic circuit board. Use the recipe browser to see the ingredients and intermediate steps in your version.
- Craft a Lab. This is the fourth listed early goal and moves you toward research.
Expand and supply the starter base
The same guide advises using the supplied sand to expand the starting island, placing available wind turbines for early power, and setting up an offshore pump and water supply. More space makes it easier to add production as new technologies unlock. The precise placement, quantities, and recipes depend on the installed mod version.

Understand the early resource loop
The community guide describes an early route in which electrolysis produces slag; slag is crushed, and crushed stone is processed through a liquifier and crystallizer to obtain ores, before stiratite is crushed. Treat that sequence as a broad description of the production chain, not a guarantee that every recipe, machine count, or step matches your current pack. Check the in-game recipe browser for the exact chain you need.
How to plan without boxing yourself in
Leave open space around early production instead of packing every machine tightly together. SeaBlock’s expanding technology tree can introduce new buildings and supply chains, and an easily modified layout is less frustrating than rebuilding a cramped starter base.

- Use the recipe browser to inspect ingredients and intermediate products in the version you actually installed.
- Consider FNEI for recipe lookup; the community starter guide mentions it as a useful aid.
- Consider a planning tool such as Helmod, Factory Planner, or YAFC if you want to map production chains. These are optional aids, not requirements for playing SeaBlock.
Should you add Space Extension?
Space Extension is an optional endgame direction described in the community pack guide. It extends the objective beyond a rocket launch and can add substantial late-game work. Whether it belongs in your run depends on whether you want that longer megabase-style goal; check the installed pack’s current description and compatibility before selecting it. The guide’s very large science requirement applies to its described Space Extension setup, not necessarily to every SeaBlock game, so it is not a reliable universal planning figure.
