What Contaminated added to Season 2
Contaminated arrived with the first phase of Battlefield 6 Season 2, which began February 17, 2026. It was one part of a broader release that also included VL-7 psychoactive smoke, three weapons, two gadgets, and the AH-6 Little Bird. Season 2 was planned across three phases: Extreme Measures, Nightfall, and Hunter/Prey. PlayStation Blog’s Season 2 announcement introduced that schedule and the first phase’s content.
That matters when judging whether one map could revive interest: Contaminated was a seasonal addition, not a standalone expansion or the whole of Season 2.
What EA said players liked—and what changed
In its March 2, 2026 community update, EA said it had received many positive reactions to Contaminated. The publisher highlighted sandbox variety, flanking routes, and the interplay between vehicles. It also said player feedback prompted the studio to expand the available airspace, giving pilots more room while aiming to preserve clear, balanced ground combat. EA’s update is a publisher summary of early feedback, not a quantified survey or an independent sample of players.

The positive case is therefore specific: some players praised the range of routes and ways to engage, and the studio made an adjustment for aircraft. That supports calling Contaminated well-received by the feedback EA described; it does not establish a broad consensus or show that the map attracted lapsed players.
What the later playtime comparison tells us
In a Season 3 update covering activity through July 2, 2026, Battlefield Studios and EA said Railway to Golmud had accumulated more than 16 million gameplay hours—nearly 2.5 times Contaminated’s playtime. The update also described Contaminated as a continuing favorite from Season 2. The Steam-mirrored update does not state Contaminated’s exact total in the cited passage.

This is a comparison between two maps over the stated Season 3 period. It does not count unique players, establish a change in Battlefield 6’s overall audience, or show whether interest rose or fell after Contaminated launched. Nor does the difference negate EA’s account of positive feedback: qualitative reactions and accumulated playtime measure different things.
Why Season 2 cannot be judged by one map
Season 2 continued beyond Contaminated. Nightfall introduced darkness mechanics and Hagental Base; Hunter/Prey was announced as the final phase. In its April 2 update, EA reported positive feedback on Hagental Base’s layout, atmosphere, and close-quarters combat, and said interest in Nightfall experiences remained strong beyond their initial window. The same update described progression changes made since the season began, including streamlined challenges and faster Battle Pass progression. EA’s Nightfall debrief provides that broader seasonal context.

Those additions and progression adjustments may have mattered to players’ experience of the season, but the published material does not isolate their effect on overall interest. Likewise, EA’s September 2 Tidal Strike update describes continued feedback monitoring and testing of future map layouts and vehicle changes; that is evidence of ongoing live-service work, not evidence that Contaminated restored engagement. The Tidal Strike update does not attribute an audience change to Contaminated.

Contaminated appears to have delivered features that EA says players praised, and the studio responded to feedback with an airspace adjustment. The later usage figure also indicates that the map remained in rotation as a Season 2 favorite. But the available official evidence does not establish that it reignited interest in Battlefield 6. The fairest answer is: Contaminated may have been a worthwhile addition for its fans, but it was not enough to demonstrate a wider revival.
