If Skyrim started crashing, freezing at the main menu, or failing to load after an update, first check whether the symptom matches a confirmed platform-specific bug, then test the game without mods. Bethesda’s August 27, 2026 hotfix addressed two specific crashes—one on PlayStation and one on Xbox—but its notes do not establish that every post-update loading problem is fixed. Bethesda also warns that outdated mods and add-ons can cause crashes, black screens, and interface errors.
The reported “1.22” label cannot be matched to a specific platform build in the official notes discussed here. Check the version shown by your platform and identify your Skyrim edition before treating that number as the cause.

Check whether your symptom matches a confirmed hotfix issue
Bethesda’s official Skyrim Update – August 20 page is dated August 20, 2026 and includes an additional hotfix section dated August 27. That hotfix lists two narrowly defined fixes:
- PlayStation: a crash when opening the on-screen keyboard and submitting text from the game’s main menu.
- Xbox: a crash caused by opening the map multiple times.
If your crash happens during one of those exact actions, confirm that the game has received the relevant update. The notes do not say that the hotfix resolves unrelated main-menu freezes, startup crashes, or save-loading failures.

The same update page says PS5 and Xbox mod storage increased to 15 GB. It also describes PS4 Creation storage as approximately 16 GB and cautions that download size can differ from installed size; storage partitions may limit how many large Creations can be installed at once. These storage details do not identify a cause for a crash by themselves.
Identify where loading fails
The right troubleshooting path depends on when the failure occurs. Before changing anything, note whether Skyrim closes or freezes before the menu, at the menu, while opening Creations or mods, while opening the map, or while loading a save. Also note the platform, game edition, displayed version, and whether mods or add-ons are installed. The official guidance does not establish one cause for an unspecified system.
Test whether mods or add-ons are involved
Bethesda says that after a game update, recently updated mods and add-ons may stop working properly until their creators update them. Its post-update troubleshooting guidance identifies outdated mods as a possible cause of black screens, crashes, and visual interface errors, and recommends removing mods completely to test whether they are responsible.
Use the supported mod-management options for your platform to disable or remove mods for a test, rather than assuming they must be deleted permanently. If the game works without them, add them back selectively and check for creator updates; a specific incompatible mod cannot be identified from the available official guidance.
Try Bethesda’s general post-update steps
Bethesda’s general support article also suggests trying offline play on consoles or Steam. On PC, its guidance includes using Steam Offline Mode and blocking Skyrim executable files through Windows Firewall. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes; follow Bethesda’s instructions for your system and restore any network or firewall settings you changed when the test is complete.

The same support page mentions a November 22, 2021 patch that fixed a black screen on launch. That is historical guidance and is separate from the August 2026 hotfix; it does not show that the newer update resolved current loading problems.

Bethesda’s Xbox troubleshooting article recommends these steps:
- Restart Skyrim.
- Disable or delete mods, then try launching the game again.
- If the game cannot load far enough to open the Mods menu, clear Skyrim’s reserved space.
- Power cycle the Xbox if the problem continues.
- Reinstall the game if needed. Bethesda specifically says not to delete save files when reinstalling.
If the problem persists after these steps, Bethesda directs players to Microsoft Support. Clearing reserved space is an Xbox-specific instruction; do not apply it to PC or PlayStation.

Contact Bethesda Support or the relevant platform’s support service with the platform, edition, displayed game version, installed mods, and the exact point where the failure occurs. For Xbox, use Microsoft Support if Bethesda’s listed steps do not help. This information can distinguish a startup failure from a menu, map, Creations, or save-loading problem without assuming that the unverified “1.22” label identifies the same update across platforms.
