Director Thierry Boulanger said he wanted him to be the optimistic presence who helps players slow down, take in the world and feel good as they play. Garl’s warmth comes through in his loyalty to Zale and Valere, his generosity and, eventually, the cost of protecting them.
Who is Garl in Sea of Stars?
Garl grew up with the game’s protagonists, Zale and Valere, but unlike them he has no magical powers. His identity as a “Warrior Cook” makes him an everyman among chosen heroes: he brings food, care and ordinary human steadiness to an adventure built around extraordinary threats. MobileSyrup’s 2023 description called the game a “sprawling 30-hour journey”; that is the outlet’s characterization, not a standardized completion-time estimate, and playtime varies.

That contrast is central to his appeal. Garl does not need a prophecy or a special power to matter. He is present for his friends, finds small ways to help them, and makes the world feel more lived-in.
Why did the director want Garl to be so optimistic?
Boulanger told MobileSyrup that Garl was designed as the friend who reminds the others to “smell the flowers” and helps players take in the world. “He was always there as a key character — the friend who’s reminding you to smell the flowers and the one who takes it [all] in,” he said in the outlet’s September 6, 2023 interview.

The intention was broader than making one character cheerful. Boulanger described wanting an optimistic presence and a game that felt refreshing, light and positive, with friendship at its center. In an October 2023 interview with GodisaGeek, he said he wanted Sea of Stars to feel like a day off or a vacation within a player’s gaming life. Garl gives that intended tone a human face: he notices what is worth enjoying even when the adventure is dangerous.
How do Garl’s actions make that warmth feel real?
Garl’s kindness is expressed through what he does for his friends, rather than through grand declarations. Early on, after the trio enters a forbidden cavern, he loses an eye while protecting Valere. Later, when Zale and Valere are training, he risks getting into trouble to sneak them treats. These moments establish a pattern: he watches out for them physically and emotionally, and makes room for comfort in the middle of hardship.

Boulanger told GodisaGeek that Garl was easy to write because he felt better whenever the character was in a scene. The same interview captures the musical version of that instinct: Boulanger asked composer Eric W. Brown to make Garl’s theme feel like “bottled happiness.” The phrase describes the creative brief, not a claim that every listener will respond to the music the same way.
What did Boulanger mean by calling Garl “the ultimate golden retriever”?
In an August 16, 2023 cover-story interview with Game Informer, Boulanger called Garl “the ultimate golden retriever” and “endlessly wholesome.” Those are the director’s descriptions of a character he helped create, not evidence of a formal ranking or universal player consensus. The “2023’s most wholesome” framing is best understood as an editorial judgment: the sources document why Garl was written to feel warm, but they do not compare him against a field of other game characters or establish a year-wide winner.

Spoilers: what happens to Garl?
Warning: major story spoilers for Sea of Stars follow.
Garl’s loyalty eventually carries a devastating cost. MobileSyrup reports that he jumps in front of an attack by the villain Aephorul and is fatally wounded. He remains with the party for a limited time before dying, and Zale and Valere grieve him as the story continues.

The turn complicates, rather than cancels, his hopeful characterization. Garl’s warmth is not protected from the game’s danger; his willingness to stand between his friends and harm is precisely what makes the loss matter. His role is both a source of comfort and a reminder of what the heroes stand to lose.
