Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst identify your platform and launcher: are you playing on Windows through the Microsoft Store/Xbox app or Steam, or on Xbox or PlayStation? Then check whether only Sea of Thieves closes, or whether the whole PC shuts down or restarts. The detailed steps below are for Windows and Steam PC; console fixes differ, so use Sea of Thieves Support’s guidance for your exact platform and error.
Before troubleshooting: identify the failure
- Won’t launch: note whether you see a black screen shortly after launching, an error message, or no response.
- Crashes during gameplay: note when it happens and whether the game alone exits.
- The whole PC powers off or restarts: treat this as a system stability problem, not an ordinary game crash. Sea of Thieves Support’s Windows/Steam article, written by Largo and last updated June 23, 2023, says that “a game crash should never shut down an entire system.”
Also check the Sea of Thieves Game Status page for current release notes, installation links, error-message guidance, and issue-reporting options. Service status can change, so check the live page rather than assume there is or is not an outage.

If Sea of Thieves won’t launch on Windows
The official launch troubleshooting article focuses on Windows launch failures, including a black screen shortly after starting. Its steps are possible remedies, not guaranteed fixes; the article was last updated June 23, 2023.
1. Install available Windows updates
Sea of Thieves Support describes Windows Update as the most common fix for a black-screen launch crash. That is a qualitative statement from the support article, not a published success rate. Install available updates, restart the PC, then try launching again.

2. Follow the steps for your storefront
Microsoft Store/Xbox app and Steam installations do not use the same repair procedure. For the Store version, consult the official launch article for its Store cache reset (wsreset), reboot, reinstall-to-the-C-drive, and app-reset instructions. Use the article’s exact steps for your Windows version rather than applying Steam’s file verification procedure.
For a Steam installation, skip the Store-specific reset and reinstall instructions. The Steam file verification step is covered in the gameplay-crash section below.
3. Check graphics drivers
The support article recommends removing old graphics drivers, installing the latest driver from the GPU vendor, and rebooting. Driver changes can affect the system, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for your graphics hardware; this is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed solution.

4. Review account, Store, and software conditions
The official article lists several conditions to investigate if launch still fails. They are not proof that any one item is causing the problem:
- Whether you are using a local administrator account and whether offline permissions are enabled, as described in the article.
- Whether more than one Microsoft Store account is signed in.
- Whether a VPN, antivirus software, MSI Afterburner, ReadyBoost, or Nahimic could be interfering.
Change or disable one relevant condition at a time, following the support article, so you can tell whether it affects startup. Avoid leaving security protections disabled beyond a controlled test.
If Sea of Thieves crashes during play on PC
The official Windows/Steam gameplay-crash article recommends checking Windows and graphics drivers, the game installation, overclocking, and background software. It too was last updated June 23, 2023.

- Sea of Thieves offers the essential pirate experience, from sailing and fighting to exploring and looting – everything you need to live the pirate life and become a legend in your own right.
- Whether you’re voyaging as a group or sailing solo, you’re bound to encounter other crews in this shared-world adventure – but will they be friends or foes, and how will you respond?
For Steam: verify the installed game files
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Sea of Thieves and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game again.
This procedure is for Steam. If you use the Microsoft Store/Xbox app edition, follow the Store reset guidance in the official support articles instead.
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install available Windows updates and check for a current driver from your graphics-card manufacturer. Restart before testing the game again.
Close overlays and unnecessary background apps
Temporarily close nonessential programs and overlays, then test whether the game still crashes. If the crash stops, re-enable items one at a time to narrow down a possible conflict.
Temporarily remove CPU or GPU overclocks
If your processor or graphics card is overclocked, restore its default settings temporarily and test the game. The support article recommends this as a troubleshooting check; it does not establish that overclocking is the cause in every crash.
If the whole PC shuts down or restarts
When Windows loses power or restarts, game-specific steps alone are not enough. Check system stability and hardware conditions such as CPU/GPU temperatures, RAM, CPU, GPU, drive health, and available storage. If the system continues to shut down, get appropriate PC or component support rather than treating it as a normal Sea of Thieves crash.

See the Steam listing for the live requirements. A full or failing drive warrants investigation; buying replacement hardware is not a routine first troubleshooting step.
For Xbox, PlayStation, or a specific error message
Do not apply the PC driver, Store, or Steam procedures to a console. Search the official Sea of Thieves Support site using your platform and the exact error text. Its support index includes issue-specific topics for Easy Anti-Cheat, Trend Micro, external HDD use on Xbox Series X|S, Direct3D, and GPU selection. The appropriate article depends on the message and platform; the index alone does not specify the remedy.
