Sea of Thieves Season 15 was a wildlife-focused update that expanded The Hunter’s Call and introduced two unusually dangerous Ancient Megalodons: one attacks with fire, while the other sends Ocean Crawlers aboard your ship. Rare launched the season on 20 February 2025, then added more hunting features in later updates. This is a look back at Season 15’s features, not a claim that it is the current season.
What was added in Sea of Thieves Season 15?
Season 15 centered on a larger role for The Hunter’s Call, alongside new wildlife encounters and tools for hunting. Rare’s launch announcement described a free seasonal update and previewed hunting content that would arrive in later monthly updates.

The main additions included:
- New Hunter’s Call stations at Outposts, Company progression through five Distinction levels, Emissary play, and Company rewards.
- Fishing and Raid Voyages for The Hunter’s Call.
- Two Ancient Megalodons with distinct threats: the fire-wreathed Feared Redmaw and the armored Barnacled Dread.
- More ambient animals, hostile wild boars guarding loot, and hunting spears that can be thrown or fired from cannons.
The rollout was staged: Rare documented some hunting additions in later release notes, rather than making every feature available with the season’s launch. Those later additions included the Megalodon Hunting Voyage, hunting spears, and wild boars.
What are the Ancient Megalodons in Sea of Thieves Season 15?
The Feared Redmaw and Barnacled Dread are two Ancient Megalodon threats added in Season 15. Their attacks call for different ship responses, so it helps to recognize which one your crew is facing.

| Megalodon | Attack pattern | What the crew needs to do | How to damage it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feared Redmaw | Attacks with fire and an explosive attack that can set nearby ships alight. | Keep water ready and put out fires as they start. | Fight the creature while managing the fires its attacks cause. |
| Barnacled Dread | Uses coral armor and sends Ocean Crawlers onto attacking ships. | Repel the boarders before they overwhelm the crew. | Use cannon fire to chip away at its coral armor, then strike the creature directly. |
These behaviors and tactics are described in Rare’s Season 15 feature page and launch announcement.
What does the Feared Redmaw do?
The Feared Redmaw is the season’s fire threat. It is wreathed in flame, and its explosive attack can set nearby ships alight. A crew that focuses only on attacking it risks letting fires spread unchecked; assign someone to manage ship fires and keep water close while others fight.

How do you beat the Barnacled Dread?
The Barnacled Dread combines coral armor with a boarding threat: it sends Ocean Crawlers onto attacking ships. Deal with the boarders so the crew can keep control of the ship, and use cannon fire against the Dread’s armor before attacking the creature directly. The cannon fire chips away at the coral protection, creating an opening for the rest of the fight.
How does Hunter’s Call progression work in Season 15?
Season 15 gave The Hunter’s Call a more developed Company structure. Crews could progress through five Distinction levels, fly its Emissary flag, earn Company rewards, and take Fishing and Raid Voyages. Outpost stations made the Company available there as part of the update.

- Sea of Thieves offers the essential pirate experience, from sailing and fighting to exploring and looting – everything you need to live the pirate life and become a legend in your own right.
- Whether you’re voyaging as a group or sailing solo, you’re bound to encounter other crews in this shared-world adventure – but will they be friends or foes, and how will you respond?
Hunter’s Call Grade 5 Emissaries also gained a useful spotting advantage: their ship’s map can show emerging Ancient Megalodon threats. That gives crews a way to watch for these encounters while sailing, rather than relying only on a surprise appearance.
What wildlife and hunting tools did the season add?
Season 15 expanded wildlife beyond the two Megalodons. Rare’s feature page describes additional passive ambient animals, while hostile wild boars guard hidden treasure in mud wallows. The season also introduced hunting spears, a high-damage tool against wildlife that can be thrown or fired from a cannon.
Wild boars and hidden loot
Boars appear in small packs on some islands. They flee when approached, leaving hoofprints and fruit to help crews follow their trail. The season’s feature page describes boars protecting treasure in mud wallows; follow the signs and face the charging animal to recover its loot. These behaviors are also detailed in Rare’s Update 3.3.2 release notes.
Hunting spear uses and recovery
A spear can be thrown at wildlife or fired from a cannon; a cannon-fired spear can pierce a ship’s hull. Update 3.3.1 added the ability to retrieve spears embedded in solid surfaces and throw them again. If a spear lodges in a ship, removing it increases the size of the damage hole, so crews should account for that before pulling one free. Rare documents these mechanics in its Update 3.3.1 release notes.

How to start the Megalodon Hunting Voyage
The Megalodon Hunting Voyage arrived after the season’s launch. It tracks an enraged Megalodon through debris left by its attacks, using the Shrouded Glass—an enchanted spyglass that reveals the creature’s trail. To begin it, reach Hunter’s Call rank 20, then start the voyage at the Quest Table. The unlock and voyage details are in Rare’s release notes.
