To start Shattered Space, own and install the expansion, complete Starfield’s opening main quest, One Small Step, then grav-jump to an orbit not occupied by a mission or encounter. A distress call should lead you to The Oracle, though Bethesda says you may need to make several jumps. Level 35 is recommended, not required.

Before you start: ownership, installation, and level

Shattered Space is downloadable content, and the base game Starfield is required. Bethesda says Premium and Constellation Edition owners receive the expansion with their purchase; Standard Edition players can buy the Digital Premium Upgrade, and Game Pass subscribers can upgrade to Premium Edition for access. See Bethesda’s launch guide and the Steam listing for those edition and platform details.

Bethesda recommends reaching level 35 for the best experience, but explicitly says any player can take on the expansion. Treat that level as guidance rather than an access gate. The expansion was released September 30, 2024, according to Steam.

How do I start Shattered Space?

  1. Confirm that you own and have installed Shattered Space.
  2. Complete One Small Step, Starfield’s introductory main quest.
  3. Grav-jump to an orbit that is not already being used by a mission or encounter. A distress call should appear and reveal The Oracle; Bethesda notes that it may take multiple jumps.

These are Bethesda’s official access instructions in “How do I start Shattered Space?”. If the distress call does not appear, Bethesda suggests making a manual save, exiting and reloading the game, loading that save, and trying a different orbit without an event. Also check that the expansion is installed.

Opening mission: What Remains

The first mission is What Remains, which takes you to the derelict station The Oracle. Bethesda’s mission guidance for What Remains directs players to find the station in a remote planet’s orbit and includes placing an emergency power cell in the wall on the left among its objectives. Follow the mission markers for the remaining steps.

Shattered Space main quest order

The expansion takes place on Va’ruun’kai, House Va’ruun’s home world. Bethesda describes the crisis as a vortex that has devastated much of Dazra, with the story investigating the vortex and the fate of survivors. The main route has eight quests, according to Game8’s Shattered Space walkthrough:

  1. What Remains
  2. The Promised, Broken
  3. Aligning the Houses
  4. Exhuming the Past — House quest
  5. Conflict in Conviction — House quest
  6. Zealous Overreach — House quest
  7. The Other Side
  8. The Scaled Citadel

Which quests can you do in any order?

After The Promised, Broken, the three House quests—Exhuming the Past, Conflict in Conviction, and Zealous Overreach—become available and can be tackled in any order, according to Game8. Completing any one unlocks The Other Side. For the route that follows the full House content before moving on, complete all three House quests, then do The Other Side, and finish with The Scaled Citadel. This is Game8’s route guidance, not an official Bethesda-prescribed order.

Choosing the right kind of walkthrough

For the opening mission, Bethesda’s What Remains page offers official mission-specific guidance. For the full quest sequence and the flexible House-quest branch, Game8 provides a third-party route. Use the latter if you want the order at a glance; consult objective-by-objective mission guidance when you need help with a particular step. The route above keeps story details light while making the branching point clear.
