Shenmue I & II Review: Is the 2018 Collection Worth Playing Today?

Shenmue I & II remains unusual for its scheduled world and patient investigation. The 2018 collection adds refinements, but it preserves the original games’ slow pace and older mechanics.

Shenmue I & II is worth playing today if you enjoy patient, exploratory adventures and want to experience two games built around inhabiting a place rather than rushing from mission to mission. Its scheduled towns, quiet investigation and distinctive atmosphere still set it apart. But this 2018 collection is a refinement of the original Dreamcast games, not a remake: slow stretches and older mechanics remain, and the remaster’s execution drew criticism at launch.

What Shenmue I & II includes

The collection brings together two connected action-adventure games. In Shenmue I, Ryo Hazuki investigates his father’s murder and the mystery of a mirror in Yokosuka. Shenmue II continues his pursuit in Hong Kong. It is one compilation containing both games, not a new standalone story. SEGA’s Steam listing describes the mix as exploration, investigative sleuthing, jujitsu combat, quick-time events and mini-games.

Why the games still feel distinctive

Shenmue’s world is designed to be spent in. Day turns to night, weather changes, and people and businesses follow routines. Ryo can ask locals for information, examine objects and follow clues, but the experience also makes room for optional activities such as arcade games, collecting and duck racing. These details give the games a lived-in quality: progress can come from learning a place and its rhythms, not just following a stream of mission markers.

That texture is the central appeal and the central trade-off. Players who like observing a world and figuring out what to do may find the routines immersive. Players expecting brisk objectives and constant action may find the same stretches aimless or drawn out. SEGA presents Shenmue as an early persistent open world and says it coined the quick-time event; those are the publisher’s historical claims, rather than an independently established measure of the series’ influence.

How the 2018 collection holds up

It helps to judge the original games separately from the quality of their re-release. The collection preserves the underlying design and atmosphere, while adding interface and control refinements. It does not rebuild the games into a modern adventure, so those updates cannot remove the slower pacing or older mechanics.

In its August 2018 review, Meristation praised the original work but said the re-release still had areas to polish. Its reviewer found Shenmue II held up better and warned that shortcomings in Shenmue I could be a barrier for newcomers, also discussing control adaptation and presentation issues. That is a launch-era judgment of the version reviewed, not a finding about every later patch or current behavior on every platform.

Shenmue I & II (PlayStation PS4), German version
  • Pioneering Dreamcast classic available for the first time on PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Updated user interface.
  • Choice of modern or classic controls.
  • Japanese audio available for the first time for a global audience.
  • Fully scalable screen resolution

Individual excerpts collected on Metacritic show the range of reactions: reviewers praise atmosphere, music, interaction and historical distinctiveness, while others point to aged visuals, dated mechanics and drawn-out sections. These are specific review judgments, not a single settled consensus. A fair expectation is an unusual and influential-feeling adventure whose mood may outlast its moment-to-moment convenience.

What changed in the re-release

SEGA describes the 2018 release as an updated presentation of the two original games, not a full remake. Features vary by platform, so PC options should not be assumed to apply identically to console editions.

Release dates differ by region and listing rather than contradicting one another: SEGA’s Japanese PS4 announcement gives November 22, 2018, while the international Steam and US PlayStation Store listings show August 21, 2018. SEGA’s announcement documents the Japanese date and edition details.

Which players should try it?

Good fit

  • You enjoy exploratory games where talking to people, looking closely and following clues are as important as combat.
  • You value atmosphere, world detail and a sense of daily routine, even when the story is not moving quickly.
  • You are curious about a distinctive pair of older games and can approach their mechanics on their own terms.

Possible mismatch

  • You want a tightly paced story with frequent objectives and little downtime.
  • You find older controls or dated presentation distracting enough to outweigh atmosphere and interaction.
  • You expect the word “remaster” to mean redesigned systems or a modernized game structure.

Ratings and editions: what the available numbers mean

Store ratings offer a snapshot of people who chose to submit feedback, not a representative survey or critic score. On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 89% positive from 1,306 English-language user reviews; its most recent 30-day window showed 100% positive from 15 reviews. The PlayStation Store showed 4.72 out of 5 from 5,051 ratings on that date. Counts and percentages can change, and the two storefronts use different rating systems.
