Yes—SEGA and Universal Pictures are developing a Shinobi film. Announced on October 9, 2024, the project has Sam Hargrave attached as director and Ken Kobayashi as screenwriter. SEGA has not announced a cast, release date, production start, or plot.
Is Shinobi getting a movie?
Yes. SEGA announced that it had begun developing a film based on Shinobi with Universal Pictures. That confirms a project in development, not a completed film or a scheduled theatrical release. The announcement does not establish that Shinobi is the latest video-game adaptation overall; “latest” is headline framing, not a ranking confirmed by SEGA.

SEGA’s October 9, 2024 announcement gives the project’s confirmed creative and producing team.

- Samurai clans engage each other in battle over who gets to rule the nation, while warlords call upon the ninja to spy on and assassinate their rivals.
When will the Shinobi movie come out?
No release date or release window was announced. SEGA’s wording describes a film in development, and its announcement also gives no production start date. There is not enough confirmed information to say when filming or release will happen.
What is the Shinobi movie about?
SEGA has not announced a film plot or confirmed which characters or events the adaptation will use. The franchise began as an arcade game in 1987 and has had more than 10 releases across platforms, according to SEGA’s announcement. SEGA’s Japanese description presents a shinobi as a modern ninja and heroic figure who confronts great evil, but that franchise description is not a movie synopsis.

What is the latest Shinobi game?
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance is a separate game, not a confirmed film tie-in. SEGA lists it as a single-player platform battle-action game. It follows Joe Musashi after his village is burned and his companions are turned to stone, sending him on a revenge journey. The game’s story should not be mistaken for the unannounced film plot.

SEGA of America describes the game as a 2D action platformer with hand-drawn worlds, multiple paths, ninja weapons, ninjutsu, and platforming challenges. Its launch notice also documented a Japan-market physical DX Pack with a PS5 or Nintendo Switch game copy and merchandise; that notice does not establish current stock or availability elsewhere. Why did SEGA mention other video-game movies?
SEGA’s announcement cited worldwide box-office figures of $1.4 billion for Universal’s 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie and $290 million for Universal’s 2023 film Five Nights at Freddy’s. Those figures are adaptation context included by SEGA, not forecasts for Shinobi or evidence of how the new film will perform.
