Usually, don’t pressure Astarion to take the Astral-Touched Tadpole unless it suits your role-play and you’re willing to persuade him. He is strongly reluctant, but the dialogue can allow you to convince him. If you would rather leave the decision open, you can refuse the initial communion and keep the tadpole.
Why Astarion resists the tadpole
Astarion’s reluctance is tied to his memory of the pain of becoming a vampire. The community-maintained BG3 Wiki entry on “Embrace Your Potential” describes him as extremely reluctant to take the Astral-Touched Tadpole. If you want to respect his stated reaction, don’t push him; that is a role-play choice, not a verified approval calculation.
Can you convince Astarion to use it?
Yes. The dialogue checks documented by the BG3 Wiki depend on your story and dialogue state, so there is no single check guaranteed to appear in every playthrough.
- A DC 15 Wisdom check is listed for a branch in which you embraced the tadpole.
- A DC 15 Intimidation check is listed for a later branch if Cazador has been defeated.
Treat these as conditional options, not a promise that either line will be available in your current conversation.

What if he agrees—or you change your mind?
A companion persuaded to use the tadpole gets a brief chance to back out during the associated cutscene. You can also refuse the initial communion yourself; the BG3 Wiki says the Astral-Touched Tadpole remains in your inventory afterward. These options let you avoid treating the first dialogue choice as the only opportunity to decide.

The available sources do not verify the exact approval change for giving or refusing Astarion this tadpole, whether refusal causes a relationship penalty, or every later narrative consequence of this specific decision. Don’t rely on a precise approval number or a claim that the choice guarantees a particular ending.
