Yes. Bethesda gave The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered game keys to the Skyblivion development team, which publicly thanked the company. The gift was a gesture of support—not an announcement that Skyblivion is canceled, merged with the remaster, or being ported to it. Skyblivion’s official FAQ currently targets a 2026 release.
What Bethesda gave the Skyblivion team
In an April 22, 2025 report, PC Gamer reproduced the team’s public thank-you for game keys to Oblivion Remastered for its modding team. The team called the gift generous and thanked Bethesda for its continued support.
In a follow-up statement reproduced in the same report, Skyblivion said: “Bethesda made it clear that they have no intention of shutting down our project.” The original X posts were not independently accessible for this reporting, so the statements are attributed to PC Gamer’s contemporaneous account.
Skyblivion and Oblivion Remastered are separate projects
Skyblivion is a volunteer fan remake of Oblivion built as a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. The team’s goal is to recreate mainland Cyrodiil, its quests, locations, and characters in Skyrim’s engine, with redesigned dungeons and exterior spaces. The official remaster is a separate release based on the original Oblivion, with graphics handled by Unreal Engine, according to the Skyblivion FAQ.
The Skyblivion team says the remaster could offer useful feedback about which changes players like and expect. It does not plan to port Skyblivion to the remaster: the project still runs on the original Oblivion engine, and adapting it would require a major restart of work already close to completion.
Is Skyblivion still happening, and when is it due?
Yes. The project’s current FAQ says Skyblivion is aiming for release in 2026, without naming a quarter. The first release is planned to include the base game content; the team says work on expansions such as Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles is planned after release. The team also says the mod and expansions will be free, while players will need Skyrim Special Edition and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe on Steam or GOG.

In a December 3, 2025 update, the team moved its expected release window from 2025 to 2026, citing its commitment to polish, stability, and completeness. It listed remaining work on Imperial City assets and interiors, navmesh, quest implementation and debugging, polish, balancing, testing, and bug fixing. The team reported the world map and quest dungeons complete and core 3D assets essentially finished at that time; those were project status claims, not an independent audit.

The keys show that Bethesda gave the team access to the official remaster and that Skyblivion publicly described the company as supportive. They do not establish that the projects have been combined, that Skyblivion is an official Bethesda release, or that the team has changed its plans to build for Skyrim Special Edition.

There has also been public praise for the fan project from within Bethesda Game Studios. GamesRadar reported that development lead Dan Lee, who worked on Oblivion: Remastered, said he was excited for Skyblivion and called its interpretation “very special.” GamesRadar relayed the comments from a Bethesda Developer Spotlight; the original video transcription was not independently verified.
