On PC, you can install many Nexus Mods files with Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 (MO2); Bethesda Creations is a separate in-game and web route available through Bethesda’s supported interface. Choose the path that matches your platform and the mod you want, then follow that mod’s page and the guide for your chosen tool.
Choose a modding route for your platform
Do not follow PC manager instructions for a console installation. The available mods and installation methods depend on the platform and on where a particular mod is published.
| Route | Best fit | How installation and order work |
|---|---|---|
| Vortex or MO2 on PC | PC players installing Nexus Mods files and following a guide or modlist designed for that manager. | Use the manager’s documented download and deployment workflow. MO2 handles loose-file conflicts through mod-list priority; Vortex uses conflict rules. Plugin order is a separate concern. |
| Bethesda Creations | Players who want to add Creations through Skyrim’s in-game interface or Bethesda’s website, including console players where the Creation is available. | Add the Creation through the supported interface, then manage its order from the Creations Load Order screen. This route does not make every Nexus mod available in Creations. |
Bethesda explains the Creations route in its official Skyrim Special Edition installation and load-order instructions. For PC, the choice between Vortex and MO2 is not a universal ranking: use the manager supported by the guide you intend to follow, and consider whether you want MO2’s explicit mod-priority controls or Vortex’s guided first-mod workflow.
Check your game version before choosing mods
Before downloading anything, confirm the platform, installed Skyrim edition, and game version. “Special Edition” and “Anniversary Edition” labels can refer to different builds or included content; the label alone does not establish that a mod or framework will work with your installation. Follow the compatibility notes on the mod page and the release notes for any required framework.

Launch the game once before setting up mods so you know the unmodded installation starts, and note its installed version. For PC setups, Nexus Mods’ Skyrim Initial Setup (Steam) covers preparation and version-dependent dependencies. Its instructions are specifically for the Steam version; do not assume that a Steam path applies to another store or platform.
Read each mod page before installing
For every mod, check the supported game version, prerequisites, installation instructions, and incompatibilities. A general beginner checklist cannot guarantee compatibility: requirements differ from mod to mod, and a framework or utility may have its own installation method.

- Winner of more than 200 Game of the Year Awards, Skyrim Special Edition brings the epic fantasy to life in stunning detail.
- The Special Edition includes the critically acclaimed game and add-ons with all-new features.
- All-new features include remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays, dynamic depth of field, screen-space reflections, and more.
- Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes, use of alcohol
- Confirm that the mod supports your installed game version and platform.
- Install required frameworks or other dependencies using their maintained official instructions.
- Read the author’s notes for incompatibilities, special setup steps, and whether a manager-based install is appropriate.
- Check whether the guide or modlist you are following expects Vortex, MO2, or Bethesda Creations.
For PC, the version-aware setup guide is Nexus Mods’ Skyrim Initial Setup (Steam). For MO2 fundamentals and its documented workflow, see Mod Manager Fundamentals (MO2).
Install your first PC mod with a manager
Pick one manager and learn its workflow before building a large setup. The steps below describe the broad process; use the current instructions in your chosen manager and on the mod’s page when their details differ.

- The most popular fantasy RPG in history
- Remastered in stunning HD for Xbox One & Playstation 4
- Winner of more than 200 Game of the Year awards
- Includes the full power of all PC mods to consoles
- Also includes all DLC from the original release (Dawnguard, Heathfire, Dragonborn)
- Choose a manager. Follow the manager used by your mod guide. Vortex’s Skyrim Special Edition with Vortex guide walks newcomers through setup and a first mod. MO2’s fundamentals guide explains downloads, enabling and disabling mods, and priority.
- Complete initial setup. Follow the setup guide that matches your store and installation. If using Vortex, its guide notes that the Mod Staging Folder must be on the same partition as the game.
- Check requirements. Verify the mod’s supported game version, prerequisites, and installation notes before downloading it.
- Install through the manager. Use the manager unless the mod author explicitly documents another method. Do not improvise separate installation steps for utilities or script extenders; use their maintained instructions.
- Apply the manager’s changes. Deploy or otherwise apply changes as the selected manager requires. Add a few mods at a time so you can identify which change is associated with a problem.
- Launch the game the required way. If a setup depends on SKSE, MO2’s guide says to launch through the respective SKSE loader path. Follow the instructions for your specific framework and manager rather than assuming the normal game launcher is always correct.
Understand mod priority versus plugin load order
“What order should Skyrim mods load in?” has more than one answer because file conflicts and plugin order are distinct. In MO2, mod-list priority determines which conflicting loose files take precedence; Vortex handles file conflicts through its conflict rules. A plugin sorter cannot replace those file-level decisions.
MO2 includes LOOT to assist with plugin sorting. Sorting is useful, but it is not a universal compatibility fix or a guarantee that every custom list has the right order. Follow the instructions on the relevant mod pages and the guide for your modlist. For Creations, Bethesda provides an order control in the Creations Load Order screen; that is separate from PC manager workflows.

Install a Creation through Bethesda’s interface
For the supported Creations route, add a Creation from Skyrim’s in-game menu or Bethesda’s website, then open the Creations Load Order screen to manage its position. Bethesda’s instructions for Skyrim Special Edition Creations and mods document that process. Availability depends on the Creation and platform; a third-party Nexus page does not imply that the same mod is offered through Creations.

Start with a small number of mods and become familiar with your chosen tool before adding more. A maintained Best Practices for Modding and Playing Skyrim guide emphasizes preparation and familiarity with modding tools. Adding fewer changes at a time also makes it easier to identify where a setup went wrong.
Do not assume that every mod can safely be added to or removed from an active save. The outcome depends on the mod and circumstances; the available official guidance does not establish one save-safety rule that applies across mods, versions, and platforms. Check the author’s instructions before changing a save’s mod setup.
Quick Recap
Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Using instructions for the wrong platform or store: PC managers do not apply to console installs, and setup paths can differ by PC storefront.
- Ignoring version requirements: Check the installed game build and the mod or framework’s release notes, rather than relying on an edition label alone.
- Installing several mods before learning the manager: Understand deployment and conflict controls before expanding the list.
- Treating plugin sorting as a complete fix: Plugin order does not decide every loose-file conflict or resolve every incompatibility.
- Assuming Creations and Nexus are the same catalog: Bethesda documents its supported Creations route, not universal availability of third-party mods there.
- Assuming save, achievement, or support outcomes: Those results are not established universally across all versions, platforms, and mods; check the applicable mod and Bethesda guidance.
