What the 24-hour Steam offer meant
The official Sniper Elite V2 Steam announcement said the game would be free to claim for the next 24 hours, ending June 5, 2014, at 10 a.m. PST / 6 p.m. BST. Steam invited players to download it for nothing and “own it forever.” The offer therefore granted a permanent claim to people who added the game during the promotion; it was not just a trial. Free to keep versus a free weekend
Steam’s current promotion documentation distinguishes a Free to Keep offer from a Free Weekend. Free to Keep is a 100% discount that grants a permanent license; a Free Weekend gives temporary access. Steam says Free to Keep promotions must run for at least 24 hours to give customers in different time zones an equal chance to claim the game. Which Sniper Elite V2 edition was included?
The giveaway announcement concerns the original Sniper Elite V2, the Rebellion game set in Berlin in the final days of World War II. Its official manual describes realistic bullet ballistics and sniper tactics. Original game and Remastered are separate editions
Sniper Elite V2 Remastered is a distinct edition, not the version named in the 2014 giveaway. Rebellion’s announcement describes the remaster as adding updated visuals, a frame-by-frame photo mode, seven playable characters from the Zombie Army series, expanded online multiplayer for up to 16 players, and previously released content. Rebellion also says players on the original and Remastered cannot play multiplayer together. Can you still claim the game for free?
No current free claim is established by the historical announcement: its offer ended in 2014. Check the live Steam listing for Sniper Elite V2 for current availability and pricing. A past giveaway does not mean the game remains free to claim, and the original edition should not be confused with Remastered.
