There is no single objectively strongest Skyrim build in the available comparisons. The right choice depends on whether you want to strike from range, control a fight with magic, survive in close combat, or play a role-focused character. Here are 14 archetypes to use as starting points—not rigid perk-by-perk recipes. Pick a core combat loop first, then add support skills as your character develops.
How to choose a Skyrim build
Choose by the actions you want to repeat in most encounters. Stealth Archer and Ranger favor ranged attacks; Barbarian and Paladin focus on close combat; Battlemage and Spellsword combine weapons and spells. Illusionist and Assassin manipulate encounters or attack from concealment, while Thief centers on infiltration. Necromancer changes combat with summoned undead. Alchemist, Ranger, and gear-focused builds make room for preparation and crafting.
The skill combinations below are flexible suggestions, not mandatory checklists. For example, a Monk is an unarmed roleplay or challenge concept, not a character built around a dedicated Unarmed skill tree. A two-handed Paladin can heal between attacks or switch equipment, but cannot cast Restoration while holding a two-handed weapon.
14 Skyrim builds to try
1. Stealth Archer
Core: Archery, Sneak, and Light Armor. Optional support: One-Handed and Lockpicking.
#1 Best Overall
Open fights from concealment with a bow, then reposition or draw a dagger if an enemy closes the distance. This is a straightforward choice if you enjoy careful approaches and ranged combat; the source article recommends it for beginners, but that is an author recommendation rather than a comparative test result.
2. Battlemage
Core: Destruction, One-Handed, and Heavy Armor. Optional support: Alteration and Enchanting.
Soften enemies with Destruction magic, then close in with a weapon. Heavy Armor suits a more direct approach than a fragile back-line mage, while support skills can add protection or improve equipment.
3. Illusionist
Core: Illusion, Sneak, and Alteration. Optional support: Restoration and Light Armor.
Use Illusion to distract, confuse, or otherwise disrupt enemies, and use stealth or Alteration to shape your approach. This build is about controlling encounters and avoiding unnecessary fights as much as dealing damage directly.
4. Assassin
Core: Sneak, One-Handed, and Light Armor. Optional support: Pickpocket and Alchemy.

Get close without being detected and deliver a quick attack, typically with a one-handed weapon. Pickpocket supports the covert role, while Alchemy gives you another way to prepare for a target or encounter.
5. Necromancer
Core: Conjuration, Destruction, and Enchanting. Optional support: Restoration and Heavy Armor.

Use Conjuration to bring undead allies into combat while Destruction provides direct magical offense. The concept works best when you enjoy having allies shape the fight rather than relying on a single weapon style.
6. Paladin
Core: Restoration, Heavy Armor, and Two-Handed. Optional support: Block and Smithing.
This is a durable warrior with healing and an undead-fighting theme. Because a two-handed weapon occupies both hands, cast Restoration between attacks or switch equipment when you need to heal; the setup does not let you cast while wielding that weapon.
7. Thief
Core: Sneak, Lockpicking, and Pickpocket. Optional support: Light Armor and One-Handed.

Prioritize access, theft, and infiltration over winning every fight head-on. Light Armor and One-Handed give you practical options if stealth fails, but they need not define the character’s main focus.
8. Barbarian
Core: Two-Handed, Heavy Armor, and Block. Optional support: Smithing and Enchanting.
Take an aggressive melee approach backed by armor and improved gear. Smithing and Enchanting support equipment progression; they are useful additions if crafting is part of the play you enjoy, not prerequisites for the archetype.
9. Alchemist
Core: Alchemy, Restoration, and Sneak. Optional support: Light Armor and Pickpocket.

Make potions and poisons the center of your preparation, then use stealth to choose how and when to engage. Restoration offers a way to support recovery, while the optional skills reinforce a covert approach.
10. Bard
Core: Speech, Restoration, and Illusion. Optional support: Light Armor and One-Handed.

This is primarily a roleplay-oriented support concept: use Illusion to disrupt enemies and Restoration to support your survival, with Speech as part of the character identity. Light Armor and One-Handed give you a modest combat fallback.
11. Ranger
Core: Archery, Sneak, and Light Armor. Optional support: Alchemy and One-Handed.

One-Handed gives you a close-range option. It is a flexible concept if you want to alternate between scouting, shooting, and preparing for encounters, but no source establishes it as objectively the most versatile build.
12. Monk
Core concept: Unarmed combat, Restoration, and Light Armor. Optional support: Alchemy and Alteration.
Build around the challenge and roleplay of fighting without relying on a conventional weapon. Unarmed is not a dedicated skill tree in Skyrim, so this archetype does not progress like a standard weapon-skill build. The source article identifies Monk as a challenging concept; treat that as a qualitative recommendation, not a measured difficulty ranking.
13. Spellsword
Core: One-Handed, Destruction, and Light Armor. Optional support: Enchanting and Restoration.
Alternate between a one-handed weapon and Destruction magic, using Light Armor for a mobile feel. Enchanting and Restoration support equipment and recovery without changing the central weapon-and-spell loop.
14. Vampire
Core: Illusion, Destruction, and Sneak. Optional support: Restoration and Alchemy.
Lean into stealth and manipulation, then use destructive magic for offense. The concept can support a strong roleplay identity, but the source article flags it as challenging without providing controlled difficulty results.

Adding skills can broaden a character, but leveling them extensively without improving your equipment can leave you vulnerable. A Gamer Guides walkthrough for Skyrim Anniversary Edition notes that enemies level with the player. Build the skills you actually use, and keep weapons, armor, and defenses developing alongside them rather than treating early skill grinding as an automatic advantage.
