Why does skate. have Mixed Steam reviews?
Players reviewing the launch build objected that it lacked familiar features from earlier entries, while some also criticized its art direction and the repetition of missions. GamesRadar’s September 2025 launch coverage specifically reported complaints about Hall of Meat, professional skaters, and a proper story mode. The same report noted that the core skating was viewed positively in the discussion it covered. These are examples from launch coverage, not a measured survey of all players or a complete inventory of the current game.
The Steam figures show why it is important to distinguish the overall score from recent reception. Steam’s live listing showed 64% positive from 62,354 English reviews overall, versus 73% positive from 1,865 reviews in the last 30 days, when checked on October 8, 2026. The overall rating reflects a much larger pool of reviews accumulated over time; the recent rating covers a smaller, newer window. Neither percentage establishes why individual players left their reviews.
What kind of game is skate.?
Electronic Arts launched skate. into Early Access on September 16, 2025. EA describes it as a free-to-play, online multiplayer skateboarding sandbox set in San Vansterdam. The launch announcement described four neighborhoods in the city and framed Early Access as a starting point for ongoing development, including new features, improvements, live events, and seasonal content.

That framing differs from a finished, offline single-player sequel with a fixed feature set. Steam labels the game Early Access and explains that such games are incomplete and may continue to change. EA Executive Producer Mike McCartney described the launch as “an invitation to help shape skate.’s future as we continue to build and push the boundaries of what this game can be.”
Does skate. have Hall of Meat or a story mode?
GamesRadar’s launch report identified Hall of Meat, professional skaters, and a proper story mode as features players said were missing at launch. That report is useful evidence of the early criticism, but it does not establish the full feature set in the live game today. Because skate. is an evolving Early Access title, check its current in-game menus and official updates for present availability rather than assuming launch-era complaints still describe the game.

What should players expect from its online and evolving content?
EA says there is no offline mode: the game requires an internet connection and is designed as an always-online multiplayer sandbox. Its official FAQ says new areas and map updates will roll out periodically. That makes access to content part of a changing live-service model rather than a static campaign progression.
For example, PC Gamer reported on a Season 3 plan for Isle of Grom that included a period of Skate Pass access, a multi-week open-access event, and restrictions returning afterward, with an earnable-currency day-pass option described. That is a report about a specific seasonal plan, not a guarantee of current access terms; check the live game for the rules in effect now.

EA also says optional premium currency can be used for premium cosmetic items. The game is free-to-play, but players should distinguish optional cosmetic purchases from access rules for particular areas or events, which may vary over time.

EA’s PC requirements article says a supported controller is needed and gives PlayStation and Xbox examples: PS4 DualShock, PS5 DualSense, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S controllers. If you already own a compatible controller, check EA’s current requirements before buying anything; the cited examples are not a reason to purchase a second one.
