Skate.’s Season 1 update was an encouraging early step for the game’s visuals: EA said it improved graphics, textures, and materials to make San Vansterdam look sharper and more cohesive. The patch notes do not describe a specific lighting-engine change, however, and early player reactions were mixed. The update is best read as evidence of continued visual iteration—not proof of a dramatic or universally welcomed lighting overhaul.
What Season 1 actually changed
EA’s update 0.28.0 notes, dated October 6, 2025, said the patch was due October 7. Under “Graphics and Materials,” EA described improvements to graphics, textures, and materials, with the aim of making the game’s look sharper and more cohesive. The notes did not explain a technical change to the lighting system or isolate lighting as the source of the visual difference. EA’s update 0.28.0 patch notes are in Italian.
That distinction matters: the update’s visual goal is clear, but the notes do not establish exactly how shadows, illumination, or other lighting behavior changed. Calling it a lighting update reflects how some players discussed the patch, rather than a technical description supplied by EA.
Visual work was one part of a broad patch
Update 0.28.0 was a seasonal release with work across multiple parts of the game, not a graphics-only update. EA also listed PC display improvements, stability and gameplay fixes, story and audio work, character-customization adjustments, interface improvements, localization, and environment and collision fixes. That broader scope makes the visual changes part of an ongoing package of improvements rather than the patch’s sole defining feature.

Players did not all see the change the same way
Shortly after the update, one player asked whether the lighting change had made the game look worse. Other comments in the same discussion included excitement about lighting changes and criticism of the post-update appearance. These are individual reactions, not a representative poll or a measured account of how players overall responded. They do show why a stated aim of sharper, more cohesive visuals should not be treated as proof that every player preferred the result. The Reddit discussion offers that limited snapshot.
Later notes show iteration—and a known lighting issue
On December 1, 2025, EA’s update 0.29.1 notes said, “Visual Improvements to the World and your skater’s eye shape and skin complexion have been made.” The same notes listed a known issue: after spending time in Settings or changing the graphics lighting setting, San Van’s shadows and lighting could become inconsistent. This shows that visual work continued and that a lighting-related problem was documented at that time; it does not establish whether that issue remained in later versions. EA’s update 0.29.1 notes provide the details.

Why Season 1 is an early signal, not a verdict
EA’s official Skate. page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists updates through September 2026 and describes the game as set in San Vansterdam. Season 1 is therefore an early chapter in a title that has continued to receive updates, not a description of its present-day visuals.
The case for optimism is modest but reasonable: EA explicitly identified graphics, textures, and materials as areas for improvement, then documented further visual work in a later update. That is a sign of iteration. It is not a developer promise about future lighting changes, evidence of a particular technical overhaul, or proof that the Season 1 result pleased everyone.
